First let me start by saying..Hello everyone, glad to be part of this great resource and community. I plan on doing some back woods camping and hiking and I want to purchase a rifle in the ar platform that will be suitable. (protection)
From time to time I will be in grizzly country so I want to work when needed. I've done alot of reading, and I'm leaning toward Armalite's ar10 7.62(.308). Does this sound like a reasonable decision or do you have any suggestions?
I also seen something somewhere about using a .300 barrel on the standard platform, this allows the use of all the standard ar15 components. (upper, lower, mags) I just don't know if that would be enough to stop a pissed bear..don't want to find out the hard way..
If you want to stop a grizz then i would go with .308 but you need it lite since you will be hiking so i would also start looking in to there CARBINE line since it will be smaller and as lite as 9 pounds with no add ons.
I would have to agree with WES....Carbine.....308...but being a A4 C owner...I can tell you that after "equipping" it...you are going to be around 12 lbs...depending on what you strap to it...
Such as hand guard, sights, scope, extra mag, bipod and adapter....ect.
