Looking to purchase an AR-10. Not sure the exact model but I know what I what. i want the unit with the standard 16 inch barrel, telescoping stock and good kick pad. What model do I want and what is my best way to get it?

Thanks for helping a rookie out.

Basically your talking about a carbine model and about every manufacturer seems to have one. A butt pad is not a usual feature so your probably looking at an aftermarket pad. There is nothing that beats running a search, visiting the different forums, the manufacturers websites etc. there is a great deal of information out there that will allow you to make an informed decision on your own

Two of the most popular models (or at least the ones I see on store shelves / at ranges most) these days are the Remington R-25, DPMS LR-308 and the Armalite AR-10. There's a number of other model types listed in the forum index that might bear a review.

My experience is only with the Armalite models, and I found them to have a good combination of value and performance. I haven't heard many folks dissatisfied with the DPMS variants either overall. The one thing to keep in mind is that the DPMS and R-25 lines don't have many interchangeable parts (most importantly magazines / uppers) with the Armalites. You kind of buy into one line or the other.

Armalite magazines are derived from the M-14 magazines, DPMS and Remington are based on the KAC SR-25 / M110 magazines. While I'd think that perhaps the M110 mag might become a standard, truth be told I have a hunch more M14s will have ended up being produced over their lifetime than we'll see of M110s, (one built as a battle rifle and having a wide fan base in the M1A, and the other as a sniper rifle) but that may change.

Best advice is to read up on them a bit, pick the one you like, or find at the best price, and get the number of mags you want for it.

Other folks please chime in if you have other insights.

If you are set on Armalite, then looks like the A4 or the 10T Carbine are your options. There are several variations of the A4 but I believe all of them have the lightweight barrel profile that is .750 at the journal and are chrome lined (which will provide better wear resistance but traditionally are less accurate, 2-2.5 MOA, than a stainless steel barrel at 1 MOA). The 10T does not have a collapseable stock, but you can always add an aftermarket. The barrel is the medium contour on the 10T and is stainless steel, so it will be heavier but also more accurate (in theory).

So it really depends on:
1. Budget
2. Planned Usage (is weight savings more important than accuracy??)
3. If you want to modify (can you get what you want directly from the factory or are you willing to do some upgrades yourself.. stock/forend/etc?)

I'm debating 16" or 20" right now.. If I go 16".. it will be the 10T Carbine and probably add a Magpul UBR or ACS stock. Heck, I'll probably just get 2 uppers and have a switch gun... then of course build a second lower over time. THE SICKNESS!!!!

you might consider getting a ar-10t with a 20' barrel having it cut to 18" and adding a good flash hider like a vortex, a good compromise for accuracy, muzzle blast and weight. a lot of custom manufacturers are finding the 18" very popular.

Ok, been looking at things and the dpms model DPMS-RFLR-WCP is looking like something I can afford. I am going to use this for hunting at under 200 yards, walking in dense woods or sharing a deer blind with my pain in the ass father-in-law. Does anyone have any thoughts on this model?

Thanks!

Carl

I think it will work fine on your father-in-law.
