Looking for some input on this. I shot the AR-10T today, and noticed an ejection issue. Here is the basic info:
Rifle: AR-10T
Magazine: 10-Rnd 1st Gen (Plunger tube at back of follower)
Ammo: Federal 168 grn OTM (Optimized for M1A), and 145 grn Privi Partizan
Problem: I was loading 1 round at a time of the Federal, and noticed that the spent casing would not completely eject out of the upper. Kind of stove piping, but without the carrier smashing it. the carrier would lock back, but it would not eject the round. Tried it with the Privi Partizan, 2 rnds, and it ejected the first, but stove piped the second. I am thinking it is possibly the 1st gen mag, but if anyone has input on this, I would be greatly appreciative. I didn't bring the 2nd gen mag I have, but will try it on the next outing. I don't think it's the ejector on the bolt head, but I'm not an expert.
In all likelyhood, it's probably the magazine or mag-related. You were firing single rounds from the 10 round mag. Try loading a few rounds in the mag. If the rifle cycles properly on all rounds but the final one, you've found your problem. If the same issue occurs with the Gen 2 20 round mag or you get the same problem regardless of how many rounds are in the mag, there could be a couple of other culprits:
Lube - Or lack there of. Ensure the bolt/BCG is well lubed.
Extractor - It could be that the extractor spring is weak/bad.
Short stroking - Occurs when there isn't enough gas to fully cycle the BC.
Check:
- That the gas block is properly aligned with the barrel gas port.
- The gas tube is firmly seated in the gas block. Also check the gas tube for dents, bends and splits.
- Check the carrier key. Ensure that it's secured tightly to the carrier. check the mouth of the key for nicks, burrs, or anything that would prevent a good seal between the tube and key. Run a pipe cleaner through the key to ensure there are no obstructions.
I forgot to ask, is this a new AR10T? Armalite's tend to be built tight and may need a couple of hundred rounds for everything to "wear in."
That's the plan on the next outing. The gun is an older 10T with the 24" barrel. I got it new and just finished the recommended break in (the long one). I'll keep everyone posts on the results.
Went to the range and brought the new Gen 2 magazines. Problem solved. The Gen 1 magazines (the ones with the plunger on the follower) that I was using as beater mags will be relegated to the back of the bus for refurbishment.
