I'm thinking of getting an AR-10 to hunt whitetails here in AL. The ranges will be about 250yds max.
I'm looking for a model that has a collapsible stock and 16inch bbl.
I want the ability to shorten it up for transport to and from my hunting lease in my old Jeep CJ5 (space is very limited).
I really like the way my little 16inch bbl 223 carbine handles and would like a "308 version" to hunt with.
A few questions
What kind of accuracy can I expect from this combo with quality hunting ammo?
Will it "feel" similar to my little ar-15 in .223? (I know about weight and stuff)
Will removing the flash suppressor and installing a thread protector affect the rifles performance?
I have the ar 10 A104c all standand use a couple different scopes 3x9 for 200 yard max hunting and a prizmatic for the thick stuff. The gun is OK but is not a tight shooter. Some days it shoots a 2 moa and then bam its shooting 3 to 4 inch groups. I was shooting 150 grain powder points and changed brands from fed to win and noticed a big difference.
Good gun for meat hunting if you are looking to shoot a couple of does. I never take it for buck hunting. The upper you are looking at should be a hugh improvment from what I have.
The gun handles good simular to my ar 15 but it is heaver of course.
My 2 cents.
Good luck with the project.
I have an AR10T with the 16 in barrel with the standard stock. It is very accurate out to 250 yd , produces the advertised 1moa and easy to carry all day or climb into tree stands with. You should have no trouble taking deer at 250 yds with that upper. The kick will be more than your 223, but it is much softer than my bolt action 308. I would compare it to my .243 bolt action.
I have no idea what removing the flash suppressor would do, or why you want to remove it, but I know there are those on this forum that do know and you will hear from them soon, I imagine .
I mounted a leupold vari-x 3x-10x with LaRue Tactical removable mounts and put on Armalite's folding front and rear sights for back up. Good for when you drop that gun out of the deer stand and can't trust that you knocked off the sites.Mounted them after I did just that.
I think the set up you have in mind is great for what you want to do. Would like to see a picture of it propped up on the antlers of that first buck you take with it.

Thanks!
I was thinking of the LaRue mount with a Leupold VX-3 3.5x10x40 as well.
The flash suppressor is another thought. I am in an invitation only hunting lease that has many older gentlemen who I respect very much. I would like to introduce them to an AR for hunting. I was thinking of removing the f/s and installing a thread protector to kind of take some of the "tactical" look away from it.
I also wanted to get some expert advice on Cerakote.
I think it would make the rifle look really good and give it extreme protection from the elements.
I am thinking of using these guys.

Thanks again and sorry to be so full of questions.
