Welcome to the site....
As for the ammo I use...well I try to stay with a few types...
Hornady is the top of my list...the 168gr TAP, A-Max and BTHP Match.
I also shoot the Ultramax 168gr BTHP, it is LC brass
and for punching holes I use the Federal Power Shock 150gr...it also is good brass for reloading...
I tried the Rem Core lock...150gr...it was ok but for the price I would rather use the Ultramax or a few bucks more per box and get the Hornady....The federal is about the cheapest FACTORY ammo I found...about 16.00 a box of 20 at walyworld....
As for the surplus ammo or steel cased....I stay away from it...would shoot it if SHTF...but in that case any ammo would do, right....
I also started reloading some, not match ammo mind you, but it will take a milk jug at 200+ yards...and that's what counts to me...
The one ammo I stay away from is the Winchester Super X...to dirty in my opinion...but just that, my opinion...the ballistic silver tips are good but WAY TO EXPENSIVE... to use for punching holes...
Just my $1.00 worth on the subject....

I have the Stainless steel NM upper on my new AR10.Its
advertised as 1:10 twist rifling and takes 168gr and above.
I been useing so far and i just got this so newbie.
But the Cheaper Then Dirt FC M118 175gr Sniper ammo at
$19.97 a box 20 shoots pretty good and is cheap practice ammo.
I also shot some Black Hills 168gr HPBT Match, Winchester
Supreme 168gr HPBT Match all good.Shot yesterday with some
Hornady TAP 168gr A-Max Tap Precision.It shot good too.My
groups are not much to brag about at 100 yards but not too bad.
We go to 200 at our range but i want to get 100 down first.
I am fixing to start reloading and all my stuff should come on the
brown truck today.
One of my better targets...

My two favorites:

Federal GM 168gr BTHP

BlackHills 168gr BTHP

BlackHills 175gr BTHP for bolts

We took the 10A4BF to the range last weekend and fed it some Remington 150gr PSP-CL. I don't think it likes the stuff. I had two failures to chamber, and it never did push the bolt back far enough to engage the last round hold-open.

Old ammo? I dunno. I'm going to try the 180gr PSP-CL this weekend, but if I don't get better results I'm looking for a new ammo mfgr!

Thank you for all the replies. I will be trying the hornaday 168mtch and fed. gm 168 match next if we ever get rid of the snow in the N.E. I'll let you know how she fires. Has anyone tried hsm match for 308. I had tried it awhile ago in 223 for my bushmaster ar but thought it was alittle pricey. Checking out some articles online looks like it did really good in some tests for 308 and is priced competetively with the other match.

I know it's not of much help right now, but I'm just getting ready to start developing a TAP 'equivalent' for 308.

I got a chorno for Christmas. I have a couple of boxes of TAP in 110 gr, 150 gr, and 168 gr. I ordered the actual bullets (VMAX 110, and AMAX 150 & 168) this week. I'm just going to use whatever brass I have (FED, WIN, HOR) and good old CCI primers.

For each cartidge (110, 150, and 168), I've measured out the COL as well as over the ogive using a comparator and come up with a mean for each.

I will next do three sets of charges for each: medium, medium-high, max. I may or may not pull one of the TAP bullets in order to actually see the powder and get a charge weight of whatever the heck it is. Probably something they cook themselves, but it'll satisfy some curiosity.

I'll then do a range trip and shoot a heap of rounds in order to get:
- Max velocity
- Min velocity
- Avg velocity
- SD
- Best grouping

This means I'll be shooting at least 10 of each, which equates to 20 of each commercial cartridge bullet weight x 3 weights, or 60 rounds.

I'll then have 3 points to graph out or use to generate a linear or second-order equation which will give me a simple approach of charge vs velocity for each cartridge.

I can then create an optimal charge *equal* to the TAP. If I so feel inclined, I can then do an "optimal charge" study and further finesse each weight for my rifle.

I also plan on doing the same for my Garand (regular ball ammo and the 168 gr VMAX bullets) and SA 1911A1 (matched to the 230 gr golden saber).

This might take a while. Guess I'd better get to work on making a spreadsheet and prepping brass!

I don't have a 308 upper for my AR-10 yet, however in my 308 remington 700 I like the Federal GM 168 and 175gr. I would imagine it would be great in the AR-10. Both are on sale at Midway for $24 a box and in stock, pretty good deal for match grade ammo.

We've got a Bass Pro, two Academy Sports and a Dicks here, but the in-stock .308 ammo selection sucks. I picked up a box each of Remington 180 gr CL-SP and a box of Hornaday 168 gr "Custom" (whatever that means) at Bass Pro.

We're going to hit the range tomorrow morning and check it out. If the 10 short-cycles with those I'm gonna tear it down and see if I've got some trash in the gas port.

UPDATE: We went to the range yesterday (1/29) and I'm pleased to say that the Rem 180gr CL-SP cycles the action just fine. I fired 10 single rounds and the bolt hold-open activated every time. I gotta get some glass on that gun so I can see what I'm shooting at (payday is tomorrow :-) ).

We put a Bushnell Elite 6500 on the AR-10, trotted out to the range, and zeroed it at 50 yds. We would have pushed out to 100 but the weather sucked. The last three rounds were on the dot and grouped smaller than a quarter. I'm extremely pleased.

Hornaday 168 gr "Custom" short-cycles the action too, but Remington 180 gr CL-SP works fine.
