One suggestion received a while back for recoil control was to use an adjustable gas block. Am I safe in assuming that the SASS System is not the correct set-up I'm looking for? From what I gather from Armalites website, the SASS is for suppressed rifles.
You are correct. The suppressor traps pressure for a millisecond or so more but is enough to cycle the weapon too hard. Repeated firings could cause damage. The selector makes the gas oriface smaller to lower the rate of pressure increase. Doing so will yield the same peak pressure that is normally found in the un-suppressed configuration.
