Hello,
I am very new, but found this link in the forums:
www.armalite.com/images/Library%5Carmali...0Characteristics.pdf

The problem is I don't know what all the options mean! Is there another site that explains the difference between all of the characteristics?

For example, what makes one a rifle and one a carbine?
What's the difference between military and free float handguard, tactical and national trigger, etc?

Thanks!

Here is something else that's out there to try and help...

Rifle Nomenclature:

10 = 7.62 / .308 (NATO chambered for all stainless steel and chrome lined barrels).

15 = 5.56 / .223 (NATO chambered for all CMV chrome lined barrels, Wylde chamber for all stainless steel barrels).

A2 = Integrated carry handle with A2 front sight.

A4 = Flat top picatinny upper receiver and gas block.

A4 and A2 (in same part number) flat top upper receiver and A2 front sight.

B = Black furniture (no "B" is standard green furniture).

C = Carbine 16" barrel.

F = Forward assist.

K = Doesn't come with detachable carry handle which was standard
at one time for these particular models.

L = AR-50 Left handed model.

LEC = Law Enforcement Commercial (M203 step down barrel and 6" "shorty" gas system).

N = National Match 2 stage trigger.

NM = National Match SST barreled rifle with NM 2 stage trigger.

RS = Flip-up rear sight.

S = Stainless steel barrel.

T = Target stainless steel barrel.

338 = .338 Federal.

6.8 = 6.8 SPC II chamber.

-2 = AWB (Assault Weapons Ban) legal firearm (NJ, NY, MA, CT).

For example, what makes one a rifle and one a carbine? Rifle generaly is 20" and Carbine is 16"
What's the difference between military and free float handguard,Generaly military are round and tapered, free float is just that, does not touch the barrel tactical and national trigger, etcmostly depicts the amount of pull it has?

Thank you mrraley!

What is the difference between an A2 front site and a gas block with Picatiny rail?

What is F = Forward Assist?

Can all models be equipped with a scope and iron sights for backup?

Thanks,
-Nate

MSH i dont think i could have came up with a better idea myself! Kestrell I also encourage you to take some of these classes. Msh is right there are a lot of dealers and people that get greedy when it comes to inexperienced shooters.

Thank you gentleman, great suggestions. I'll look for some local training places that have AR-10s for rental.

So, what is the difference between an A2 front site and a gas block?
By looking at the different pictures on the Armalite site, I think I'm beginning to understand, but still lots of questions.

What does the "Forward Assist" mean?

And how about the scope + iron sights for backup? Is that possible with all models, or do I need to be looking at a certain model?

Also, one thing I can't quite determine from the pictures. Some have a smooth handguard, and some have a nice ergonomic shape with grippy contours. I thought one might be the "free float" and one might be the "military" version?

What does the "Forward Assist" mean? On the right side there is a button to assist the bolt into battery if needed. gerneraly you don't need it, but it's there in case you do.

And how about the scope + iron sights for backup? Is that possible with all models, or do I need to be looking at a certain model? You can mount a scope on an A2 model and still able to use the iron sights. But that puts the scope at a rather high point. Now another option is flip up sights on a flat top and something like an EOTech or ACOG.

Also, one thing I can't quite determine from the pictures. Some have a smooth handguard, and some have a nice ergonomic shape with grippy contours. I thought one might be the "free float" and one might be the "military" version? This all depends on what your intentions are to do with the rifle. Free float "usualy" has to do with target and match rifles, then you have railed hand guards for other gadgets to add on, or just the plain round hand guard with ribs so your hand don't slip.
