MSH,
You are right that an inch or two of exposed gas tube is not really a big deal from a durability point of view. Before I got the long free float rail from Art, I was using a Noveske rail and the gas system hung out about an inch. To me it just looks funny and I did not like it. So when Art started offering the longer tube in late 2009, I bought one. If I'm going to have a rifle with around $2k invested I want it to function right and look good. I just think the option to cover the gas system should be available to those that want it. I suggest that you drop Art an e-mail and set up a call. He makes all of the Noveske rails and my guess is that he would be willing to work a deal with you. If you have something cooking for the longer run fine but with Art you can be offering the long rail in just a couple of weeks.
It's just a suggestion. I would like to see your barrel service take off and I think this might help. I recognize that I don't know all the details of your business since I'm just one customer.
Would there be any advantage in getting a barrel for the AR10 set up in the .308 with the Ackley improved shoulder???
Would it take special small base dies to reload the brass???
Just curious,My Cousin had His pre 64 Win. model 70 set up with the Ackley and He says it really made a big difference in the way the rifle performs.
Thank You for the info.
I first purchased an M1A .308 and the dealer told Me for that rifle I should use the small base dies for the auto feed so I have been reloading everything with the small base dies.
I have also shot a lot of Federal factory ammo in both rifles but I do`nt know if they are loaded to the small base spec. or if they are factory loaded to the full length spec.
I have had no problems cyclying with either the factory or the small base ammo.
I could probably gain some case life with the full length dies, possibly.
