Where did you source the extra long gas tube? 22-250 has always been a favorite of mine, don't have the rifle anymore, shot it out with heavy handloads as a youngster. Also curious how you arrived at 27 inches for the barrel length?
I used 3/16".049 wall stainless tube sourced from McMaster Carr. Both ends needed a little lathe work to fit the gas block & receiver/gas key. The barrel came as a profiled blank 29 ish inches long. I like velocity and this was not going to be a light rifle anyway so after cutting and threading the tenon, fitting the extension and chambering I had roughly 28.5 left. Need to knock off at least an inch to get to good bore so I decided on 27. A +4" gas would probably be enough for a .22-250 but I was originally planning on a .22-243 Middlestead and +5 was the recommend for that. My first center fire rifle was a Rem 700 ADL in .22-250 and I really like the cartridge. Because this is my main prairie dog rifle I need lots of brass and the .22-250 is way easier for that. May still build a Middlestead upper though. This building stuff is lots of fun and I like having control of all of my fits and tolerances. I'd like to put a longer barrel on my .308 but it shoots so well I hate to mess with it.
That's gonna be a wicked prairie dog gun! You might need a water jacket to keep it cool with 20 rounds on tap per mag, I'd have a hard time letting it cool.
Actually, due to the taper of the .22-250 case, you can only get about 7 rounds in a mag before the follower gets to jacked up. I never let it get too hot to touch and with the JL Billet hand guard it cools pretty quickly. I have a funnel & hose to run cool water through it via my cleaning guide but haven't used it yet. Last year was pretty breezy and the barrel air cooled just fine.
GGaskill, JP sells aluminum heat sinked barrels although I think they're more aimed at 3-gun.
