Also I am thinking of bucking up and getting the custom turrets from Nikon for specific loads what do you think?
I've had good luck with Privi 168s and think it's a good, economical alternative to Federal Gold Medal Match. It shoots a little dirtier, but the down range performance is very comparable. Savage bolt guns don't seem to like it, though.
IME, custom turrets work best with a "generic" reticle like a mil-dot. When you have a BDC-type reticle tuned to a particular bullet, there will still be a difference between the correction the reticle "tells" you to make and the actual correction.
I have the Nikkoplex reticle, so no BDC , or Mil Dot on my scope. Just crosshairs. I think I will play around with it and get more experience with what I have before making that decision. I've found former Com Bloc ammo manufacturers products tend to be dirtier. I have never used it except in 7.62x39 though. Thanks for the advice.
By the way, I am a huge fan of Savage bolt guns. My son and I both have them in 30-06 for deer, bear, etc. I found the Sierra 165 gr. BTSP is an incredible performer in them. I loaded up a bunch of National Match brass with those bullets and IMR 4770 I believe it was( can't remember the powder charge) 30 years ago and We are still using it with good results! That is one combination I am comfortable out to 400 yards with. Probably longer, but I didn't load it to max, because it was also being used in a pump gun for a while. Do you have any experience with Savages new sniper platform rifle? It has gotten some good reports. Not a Steyr, but close for one third the price!
I have a lot of love for Savage rifles, they're probably the best value in a bolt gun going today. I haven't shot any of their tactical offerings lately, though.
You reload? Awesome! For your AR, try a 168 Sierra SMK over top of 40 grains of IMR 4895 W/Federal match primers, COL of 2.8". Works like a champ out of both of my big block ARs
Correction: I used to reload. When we moved up to a cabin in the woods, I had to give up as no space to do it. Now that we have expanded the place, I may go back to it. Either that or consider a second mortgage to pay for ammo! (joking). I would like to get back into it just because sitting at the bench doing it is incredibly relaxing as well as saving money. I am gonna write that combination down just in case. When I was growing up, Remington was my Dad's and my bolt gun brand. For my son and I it's become Savage.
