Old new guy here,

Thinking about an AR10 purchase and I'm looking for as much info I can get BEFORE I make a stupid mistake ! I'm not sure which rifle would better suit my needs the AR10 A4F or the AR10 TNF . I'm a little concerned about the weight of the 10TNF @10.3 lbs vs 8.9 for the A4F . I can't use it for hunting anything but groundhogs in my state nor can I use it in PA for deer . I really don't know that hunting is my main conceren but since it is a possibility elsewhere what do you folks feel about the added weight - is it rally that much more cumbersome ? I am concerned about accuracy . Will the A4F be as accurate as the TNF ? I know the triggers are different and the handguards are different -I guess what I really want to know is the 10TNF strictly a bench shooting rifle or can you cart it out to the fields and shoot gongs at 300 + yards ? I have not to this point considered the carbines , are they as accurate ? One other thing -Green vs Black does it make a difference in say add ons etc or is it just a personal choice ?

Thank you in advance for your time , help , and consideration .

I can't answer for the TNF bud but I have the A2BF myself. Depending on what kind of hump you have when hunting, by the time you add ammo and accessories, you are talking a good amount of weight beyond what the specs call for.

If you will be walking with the weapon "at the ready", going lighter can only improve the pleasure or your trip not to mention how much energy you have later to hump out whatever it is you score so take into account the fact that factory specs as opposed to what real life, locked and loaded, scoped, flashlight mounted and accessorized is going to be like.

I have absolutely NO problem taking out targets at 300 yards with my A2BF all day long and with the .308 caliber, I don't see pretty much ANYTHING being an issue so it's all going to come down to what you really think you need AND what kind of humping you plan on doing.

Lighter never hurts but if you are going to be making very long shots and plan to hump with the weapon slung, then added weight may not be a problem for you but if you plan on humping "at the ready" a couple extra pounds could make a bit of a difference to you AND whatever you hope to shoot since response time could be affected.

I'm almost 50 and although I don't hunt, I AM a vet of more than just the Army and I can tell you that long humps with a lot of weight are not as much fun or as glamorous as movies make em out to be... :)

I don't prefer a carbine myself and like the 20 inch barrel and the A2BF is pretty much all the weapon I need for my style of doing things from 100 yards and out. Weight is good, fires like there is no tomorrow and just a damn rugged and dependable weapon.

Certainly not what my dear old M60 was but mobile and dependable just the same and if I was going out pig hunting, response time and distance out and then back in would certainly be a deciding factor when it came to the kind of weight I wanted to carry. A couple extra pounds is nothing at the store but 10 miles or so from you truck is another story.

Just my thoughts on it bud and excellent choice of weapons either way. Armalite AR10 series weapons are gold in my book and I'll be picking up an M15A4CB in 7.62 x 39 for my wife next spring.

Good luck with your choices. When spending money on weapons, there is no such thing as TOO much info and I'd say you are on a very good track with your choices so far.

One more thing I just thought of is that after reading a lot of the posts on this site in particular, I feel pretty damn blessed with the Armalite AR10. I've noticed many posts from other owners of different "brands" of weapons saying their rifle is "picky" about their ammo.

Although I won't use any steel casings, I've thrown a LOT of different ammo through my AR10 and it has eaten up everything from 150 grains to 185s and even tracers so your choice of ammo is essentially wide open to whatever you find that gives you that warm fuzzy feeling whenever you squeeze on off...

Sharkey ,

Thank you for your prompt reply . Well I'm passed 60 and did my sight seeing in Northern I Corps 68 to 70 . I really have no intention of carrying " at the ready " -sling arms IF I hump . But you are 100% correct-add a mag or 2 , optics / mounts , a pack or suspender fanny pack loaded with necessities and you are in the weight watchers ballroom . Where I normally deer hunt rifles ar not permitted and I ride my ATV to within 250 yards of my tree stand . When I hunt in Canada I use a bolt . So I guess I'm as really kind of concerned about shooting offhand weight . You sound as though you are doing well with the rifle -would you think either would suit my needs . What kind of optics are you using and do you think the SS barrel is any better ?
Thanks again & good shooting .

I'm just an old point and shoot fella bud and the gurus on here can help you with those two topics of SS barrels and optics much better than I.

I can tell you that the double lapped chrome barrel on mine will dump 3 or 400 rounds a day like it's alergic to em but SS MAY be more accurate for longer shots which is probably why they charge more for it...lol

I did change the front pin to the smaller, National Match size which, with my beat up eyes, and on longer shots, helped a bit with target aquisition and consistency but I'll be looking for optics before too long myself. Too damn many blows to the head or something over the years...

Sorry I can't help much here but again, some of the guys on here have been through ALL of the bells and whistles ten times over what I'll ever even WANT to so I'll bow to the gurus for your best interest on this one.

Good luck.

As far as I know the only factory mags are from ArmaLite. You can convert M14 mags but that requires work and may be functional but not pretty. Unless you have a load of M14 mags sitting around I'd just buy them from ArmaLite.

They offer bulk packs and from time to time members of the site have purchased a bulk pack and split it up amongst members of the site.

Getting back to your first question A4F or TNF I would say it depends on what you need your precision to be. My TBNF shoots 1/2 MOA. If you are going to be shooting groundhogs at 500 yards then a TNF model would be good. If you are going to be shooting them at 50 yards then the A4F will give you a shorter length and lighter weight which are two huge benefits in my book. I have the 24" barrel which they have since shortened to 20".

The extra length will help velocity and tighten up the precision but it is more than you need unless you want to shoot tacks and/or go long range.

All of this is just my :twocents: and that won't even buy you a primer these days.
