How often should I clean my rifle?
Is it REALLY necessary to breakdown the bolt carrier group as detailed as it describes in the owner's manual? I'm not too comfortable doing this.

Don't worry about breaking down the bolt carrier group. The cam is usually a little tough to get out on new guns but you can find several threads on the subject. It is really very simple and very hard to mess up. How often you should clean is a personal taste thing. You can put a ton of ammo downrange before it will get close to being a function issue in any AR platform but then who likes a filthy rifle in the safe.
If I remember right BMS has a video posted showing himself breaking down the bolt carrier and lubricating it.
If you run into any problems I'm sure somebody here can help, enjoy!

First, congrats on the new rifle and welcome to the world of big block ARs. While not necessary, I'd go ahead and disassemble the bolt/bolt carrier to clean off any sort of packing grease or residue that shipped with the rifle. It also allows you to inspect each part for dents, cracks or burrs. Re-assembly is a snap because parts will only fit one way; there's no way to put a part in backwards.

As JT says, cleaning and scheduled maintenance is really a personal thing and there are a couple of schools of thought on that as it pertains to ARs. Regardless of your cleaning schedule, use a liberal amount of quality lube on the bolt, bolt carrier, and upper receiver. I've had excellent results with SLiP 2000 EWL, Royal Purple, and MPro 7. Think of the upper receiver assembly as a piston in a cylinder, like in an engine. The piston and cylinder need lube to allow the piston to move smoothly within the cylinder. The same principle applies to your AR's operating system. Use good quality lube, good quality ammo and life with your new AR10 (or any DI AR, for that matter) will be good.

Gary Sansone (Forum Member and gun dealer) recommended using Synthetic lube oil to lubricate the bolt/carrier group. This made sense to me as the oil can surely stand the heat and obviously has excellent lubricating qualities. I'm sure some will gasp when reading this.

But think about the recommendation and the qualities of synthetic oils today.

Then tell please if you agree or should I be using something else?

As for cleaning a schedual, I clean after every range shoot. But I have a 13 year old daughter. So I wait until her little boy freind comes over.
I've got some of the cleanest guns in Texas!!!! LOL
The poor kid. He just stars at me when he comes over. He said once "Mr. Sullivan you're always cleaning guns". I said, I don't want to miss.
His little eye's got big and he followed Sierra out front to play basketball.

With an AR, any lube beats no lube at all and I've used some...nonstandard substances in the past to lube my carbine. I know several people that use motor oil or ATF without issue.

I used PB Blaster. Takes off all the carbon and leaves a nice light oil. I have run my gun way below freeing and in the heat of soth Texas without issue.

and you are mean to that kid Moby, :) LOL

First...
My Congrats on your new Rifle....

Now "Let It Begin"....
This topic (Cleaning) as well as Barrel Break in....has been debated and argued to death....and usually causes a major controversy...
But as always...I will add my .25 worth...

The Bolt and carrier are very simple to take down...they are much easier than the 15s just for the fact they are bigger...
I did a few vids on the mil-comm products and in this one I show how to take the bolt and carrier apart....go forward to 3:31 to see how it is done..

Also....
This is a vid I did on cleaning the M-15....which is practically the same...
and it shows just how easy it is to take your rifle down... ;)

Now...as what was asked and said....
You should clean the bolt and carrier as directed by the manual (you need to be familiar and experience with all aspects of your rifle, there is no need to be reluctant) ....that being said...but it is also a "Personal issue" as to when you do it...or how often..
I personally do it if I fire 50 rounds or more...or if the rifle has set in the safe for a long period of time...usually just a quick clean and re-lube...again this is Me...
Now...I (here we go)...recommend following the "Factory Break In" as it states in the Manual....I did this for the first 500 rounds, using high end ammo...Hornady Amax and BTHP Match...168gr...Then again...this is ME...
and my rifle preforms top notch...after 1500 rounds...I can punch the center of a target with no problems....I don't shoot for groups..One Round...One Target...again...this is me...
I hope some of this has helped...and to all...Remember...this is ME..the way I did it...Everyone has their Own Way Of Doing It...kinda like sex...  B)
