OK sorry if this is in the wrong spot. Need armorer advise or help. I installed a bayonet lug on a railed gas block and Im positive I reassembled incorrect. Not sure where leak could be, but carbine short strokes bad now. Single shot only, does not catch new round or just crushes it sideways. couple of stove pipes and magazines do not lock back on empty. New magazines and factory ammo win super X soft point and rem umc FMJ less than 500 rounds. I know it was me, but gas block seated all the way back and gas tube is not loose. Just not sure what to do short of sending back to Armalite. Thanks for the help. Also I'm located in Bozeman MT If anyone is nearby for armorer help. Thanks,Jeff
I have the FF hand guards, does this still apply? Is there any way to test if I corrected the problem in house or do I just have to shoot? I'm just trying to avoid damage or injury.
Just a guess here, but when you loosened the screws to install the lug the gas block rotated a bit and is now off center with the barrel's gas port. Another possibility is after you installed the lug, you didn't tighten the screws down enough and now have a gas leak.
A quick way to check for a misaligned gas block is to stabilize the rifle on a flat surface or vise (If using vise and you don't have a mag well block, wrap the receiver in a cloth and tighten the vise gently until the rifle is snug. No need to torque it down like a gorilla.)
Use a level to take a reading on the flat surface or vise. Put a small tic mark on the level to note where the edge of the bubble is at if the surface/vise isn't perfectly flat. Then place the level on the gas block and take a reading. If the two readings match, then your gas block is aligned correctly. If not, then loosen the screws and rotate the gas block until it is aligned.
If the screws are simply loose, put a bit of blue loctite on the threads and tighten them to 65 inch-pounds per Armalite's instructions in Tech Note #97.

FIXED!!!!!!!! :woohoo: I was doing everything right and was confirmed by all your good advice. Thanks. It was a loose gas key... Dont know how and how the hell it conveniently happened right when I installed the bayo lug. That was some coincidence. Anyway weapons up and running again due to chase at MTFI. Does this occur often with AR's? Had a Bushy 5.56er with three times the rounds fired and that never happened. Well pics soon and thanks for the help.
It's all in the the way the gas key screws are secured. The standard is red locktite on the threads followed by staking the screws into place. Hopefully your 'smith did those things when he re-tightened your gas key.If he didn't, you might want to get him to do that for you. If you've got a small punch in your tools at home, it's pretty easy to do yourself.
He did and thanks for checking. he said to have taken the armalite armory course and so far i;m convinced. I'm planning to acquire more firearms soon and I need to be able to maintain all.
Care and feeding of the AR, regardless of caliber, is pretty straightforward once you understand how all the parts work together. The best thing about the AR is it's completely modular. While this means more individual parts, it also means you don't have to replace complete sub-assemblies, you simply replace the worn/broken part with a new one.
EXCEPT for barrels and bolts. As a rule, replace the bolt and barrel together, lest excess headspace rear it's ugly head. At the very least, get the headspace checked before changing the bolt out because chances are the bolt will break before you wear out the barrel on an AR.
