I just left the Knob Creek KY Machinegun Shoot. I wanted some ammo, but it was scarce. Mostly Wolf. I did land some Venezualan CAVIM.
While looking at the Class III stuff, one dealer had a Portugese AR10, probably made in 1959! It was obviously well used. The real McCoy! It was only $15000! I whipped out my credit card and -- I wish!!! But I did get to look and touch, and talk to the owner. Unfortunately, he knew nothing about it's history or how it got to the USA.
I left the shoot early. It rained, and the campground became a swamp. But at least I got to fondle an original AR10 from the 1950s.
The portugese A.R.10 came from Holland in 1960, and came back to holland at the late 70's and begin 80's
They were suppose to be dismanteld but some came in to the civil market, arround 2000 of them. The rest was taken apart.
I am the proud owner of one of them and it has a lot of usersdamage but that gifs it something special.Probaly yours was one of the 2000 and found its way to the States.
With some of the parts of the broken up rifle's I made a carabine upper according to the original blueprints.
because of the short gastube it fires shortburst,3 rounds at a time.
This is the reason I don't fire it much because in Holland I can only fire semi.I wil try to put some pictures on this website.
I also have some paperwork and bills from A.I to Portugal.
If you know the number of the rifle I can check when it was sold. The price at that time....125 U.S.dollar
In total they sold 3300 rifles to Portugal.
My paperwork includes 300 rifles.
Stef, that is very interesting. Thanks for the post. I do not know the serial number, and don't know who now owns the rifle. Do you know if any of the original AR10s are still in service in either Portugal or Sudan? I imagined that they were retired, but maybe still being used in a poor country like Sudan? Just curious.
I would love to be able to get a handguard set for the portuguese contract AR-10's. They have four pieces total, two are metal and two are plastic/bakelite.
Stef you got the FAL type trigger, I think the gates are the same on these rifles. Armalite made a run of those with the top over charging but I dont think they sold well. I'll pull the one I have down and check it. I may have an extra gate. These guys over on this side of the pond aint never seen the trigger group like you have, I wish the pictures were clearer so they could see a different trigger system.MSH
