My manual for SHTF is "Lucifer's Hammer" by Niven and Pournelle. Think of everything that can go wrong, and they thought of even more!

My take from it is that in a real SHTF scenario there is only one way to thrive (or even survive): A defensible medium size town of full blown gun-tot'in rednecks with farming experience, a couple of doctors and vets, and a well stocked Walmart or two! If you find that on the map let me know!

That was an entertaining read, and Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle write an entertaining book. Hammerfall is pretty good as well.
