"The couple went next to a Wal-Mart across the street, where Jerad Miller entered, fired one round and "told the people to get out and this was a revolution and that the police were on the way."
In the frenzy, shopper Joseph Wilcox decided to confront Jerad Miller. Wilcox, 31, went from the returns area to Miller and pulled his concealed firearm. But before he could fire, Amanda Miller shot him in the ribs and Wilcox collapsed.
By now, police had arrived, and two five-officer teams entered the massive store."
So one of the most important points I learned in my concealed carry class, was above all else, be a good witness. Pull your gun only as a last resort. Be aware of your surroundings. And if you fire your weapon and injure or kill someone, including the perpetrator, get ready to be sued.
While Joseph Wilcox was obviously brave, but I submit, had he just been aware and a good witness, he would still be alive and the outcome for the two wackos would have been the same.
Joseph Wilcox was a victim of stress and inexperience.
While he could have made a difference, his passive approach got him killed. He should have kept his pistol concealed until he had a clear upper hand. No one walking into a store armed to the teeth will turn out well.
I don't care if he shot those two in the back. He simply was not going to win by confronting and pointing a gun at them. These two individuals armed with pistols, a rifle and a shotgun and already fired a round... A couple of quick rounds in each of them would neutralized the threat to a sufficient level..
When I worked for the Sheriffs dept as a Deputy our Sheriff told us this:
You ONLY pull your gun from your holster when you intend to shoot, otherwise don't pull it, but always make sure you are the first one to pull it, but when you do you better be prepared to fire.
He also said: Running around waving your gun is threatening to all, good or bad, you are not at war, you are a Peace Officer, you last resort is the gun.
I agree, your only advantage is "they" don't know you are armed.
A few years ago, a guy was in a local smoke shop with an open carry. There was no sign of trouble. A teenager came up behind him, grabbed his weapon, and promptly killed him. Had the victim carried concealed, he would be alive today.
That incident made a believer out of me, concealed is the smarter way.
