I have wondered the same but thought I was alone in the woods...

.300 AAC Blackout… I Don’t Get It

Okay, so I feel like the guy in the room who doesn’t get the joke. Why was that funny, or in this case, why is everyone so nuts over .300 AAC Blackout? I am really really quite confused by the widespread infatuation with the cartridge, and I really don’t get it even after owning and shooting the round.

First let me say I do get the idea of the cartridge, and in fact I used to shoot the original JD Jone’s SSK 300 Whisper that AAC copied as the 300 Blackout–well, that they allegedly copied. The SSK design cut down a piece of .223 brass and opened it up to load a .308 round in it, and it’s powered with about as much powder as I put pepper on my salad.

Were these two great ideas conceived separately and independently? JD Jones did create the round first, and the Blackout followed after that. It’s really not my legal decision to make, but it does seem pretty odd that in most cases you can use the dies interchangeably. AAC did have outstanding marketing, and after begin purchased by Remington/Freedom Arms Group/DPMS, that marketing power increased exponentially. It was something new to sell and they did just that in a big way. Everyone wanted the 300 Blackout round.

So yeah, I get the round and its background, and I’ve shot it extensively. Theoretically, it’s great to have a hard hitting subsonic round that maintains very good accuracy with the 240gr Sierra Match King, but the sub-sonic 300 Blackout round we stuff into AR-15s will not actually cycle and function without a suppressor or funky pistol-length gas system.

When I listen to some discussions, I feel there's a lot of novelty and mystique associated with this cartridge. Many feel it's the choice of covert black ops teams which give it appeal.

I was interested in this little cartridge so I did build a full rifle and it does shoot pretty well. My rifle incorporates a Wilson barrel with a pistol length gas system. It functions flawlessly with both 125 grain supersonic and 220 grain subsonic ammunition.

Loads

125 grain Nosler Ballistic Tips using Winchester 296 yields a muzzle velocity of about 2200fps.

220 grain Sierra HPBT using IMR 4227 yields a muzzle velocity of about 1050fps.

It's not a bad round and I personally I feel it's better suited for close quarters suppressed situations..........like home defense!!

When it first came out and became the bullet du jour and the fan boy wagon loaded up till the wheels flattened I too wondered about it. Like you I see it a more of a niche round than a general use.

Remember the race to see who got a 6.8 xxx, now almost no one makes them at all, yet only a few years back it was the end all be all...

Cowboy, I couldn't agree more....

I "may" have also built a rifle chambered for the 6.8 spc for the same reason I built the 300 AAC Blackout...........just sayin of course....

Nothing wrong with it, but what happens is we read the mags and of course they ballyhoo anything because they sell advertising. So no matter its always the best thing since sliced bread. When was the last time anyone read any mag that takes advertising a article blasting x product? Not sure if anyone is into SCUBA, but the SCUBA mags may well be the worst. Every piece of equipment is world changing and all but blessed by the Pope.

So everyone gets caught up in the frenzy of beating a path to buy (SOME of you may remember) the Pet Rock. With some luck I view a lot of stuff with a jaundiced eye and look for validation which frequently is hard to come by...

HA! I do remember the Pet Rock craze and did not bite....but then again, a few favorite TV shows of mine back in the day was Car 54 Where are you, Combat, and McHale's Navy...

Today when I stroll down memory lane I pack a lunch....

When I look at a new round I analyze it's ballistics and if it's an SAAMI approved cartridge with readily available ammunition and reloading components I might be inclined to add "1 more gun" to my collection...

My $0.02

1. How hard is it to drill the gas port oversized to handle the lowest pressure subs, than use an adjustable gas block to turn it down for supers...

2. I have 223/5.56 brass with split necks and dented shoulders. Forming 300 BLK gives them a second life.

3. If I want an AR with 7.62x39 performance I no longer need special mags, proprietary lowers, less common .311 bullets or have to scrounge for reloadable brass if I want to handload for it.

4. Where this round really shines is in a 7.5" Barreled "PDW"/SBR.

I never bought the 6.8 hype... The 6.5 does everything the 6.8 does then does it to 1000 yds in a proply built rifle. Also wider selection of 6.5mm bullets.

Neither, just a thought provoking discussion, in the final analysis its your call to make.

What often happens is the masses who are followers simply wade into and follow never looking to their left or right to validate the premise. It happens in every thing you can imagine.
