This is very important and clearly evident every evening on the news when you hear about the gang-bangers and drug dealers shooting up street corners and the only person they kill is the innocent kid in a car seat who is struck in the head.

"One shot one kill" is all about shot placement and fortunately the US military are some of the best marksman and with training and research into this further hopefully we stay on top!

You are right. In combat the best shot is the easy shot. Sure 'tween the eyes is great and you don't need no double tap, but its a hard shot to make and takes a good aim. However you you an spend less time aiming and go for the pie plate center upper mass and this gives you 2x at a lung and 1x for a heart shot. In fact to can train that in instinct shooting...

so I always heard the military uses full metal jacket as apposed to hunting type bullets because they prefer to maim as it takes more people out of the battle(buddy's pulling their wounded from line of fire- medics called in , etc). Is that correct?
I decided to try some military ammo on a deer hunt. 4 rounds through the left shoulder broadside at 50 yds and the deer just stood there trying to figure out where the noise was coming from . I had to put the 5th shot between her ears.
Used the same gun with a 165gr hunting round behind the shoulder and that deer dropped like a rock

Military myth. The reason most militaries use FMJ type ammo is from the Hague Conventions of the 1930s, which forbade the use of expanding projectiles like HPs and Dum-Dums. The US was not a signatory of the Hague Conventions, but we generally follow it's restrictions. Increased wounding potential was one of the reasons the small caliber high velocity rounds of the 50's gained such momentum, as it was seen as a way around the Hague Conventions. The rounds moved so fast that when they hit flesh they fragmented through bullet upset, causing a much larger permanent wound cavity (-ies) that belied their size. This resulted in the US armed forces going to a .223 55gr FMJ.

And as always, shot placement is king. I dearly wished all the target exposures I had over my career were like E-type silhouettes on the range. Sadly, this is not the case. In a complex environment like mountains or cities, exposures are fleeting. You take what you can get and if all I can see is an elbow or a knee, then I'm gonna shoot at an elbow or a knee.
