Like you I have long since stopped saying to them that it simply will not shoot that far or the drop is over 144 in at that distance. I just paste in some hard data (as above) and look for a reaction. Most often I get they were using HS-LD ammo (High Speed-Low Drag) made by virgins in Siscos House of Strippers and Corvette Emporium. What is odd that inspite of hard data (which I pull off the Winchester site) they continue to insist their .22 which formerly belonged to a Marine Sniper and Navy SEAL and is a special Issue Ruger SOCOM Sniper model and is lethal out to 1 mile. I actually had one guy tell me he was taught to shoot by a Marine Sniper and that was the reason he could hit targets ON THE RUN at 350+ yrds and drop them.13fcolt wrote: Firearm mythology is such a rich and vibrant culture all its own. Buy a box of .22lr and it says, or used too, something about dangerous up to 1 1/2 miles. This little safety disclaimer, meant to make shooters aware of their backdrop and cover the lawyer side of ammo production, has been distorted into the gospel of the gun myth cult. In other words, people really believe that to be the effective range.
You can find this choice cut of slow roasted nonsense being trumpeted by the antigun zombies throughout their propaganda as a ballistic 'fact'. Proof positive of the world ending death ray that is the .22lr, and by default anything larger is just madness incarnate threatening to knock jets right out of the sky at 37,000ft.
The most heated and lively bunch, like OC has found, are the soft headed rubes that hang out around the internet equivalent of the gun counter at your local dealer.
"Oh really"? "Well, lets check the math on that, ok"? The dim, uncomprehending glare that follows having their BS exposed is just as entertaining as the linguistic indicators of deception used when they begin swearing to high holy how that 40 grain solid passed clean through the 240lbs 14 point from nearly 900 yards in high winds, launched from the rack grade iron sighted rifle.
Not a single one has ever met me at the range to witness these feats duplicated. These days though, I'm less of a hot head about it and just enjoy the stories, fighting to hold back a combination of laughter and the urge to call BS.

Don't knock it, it funds my retirement.
Actually the wife and I have been talking about moving down to Texas and open up a little Ma and Pa exotic dance establishment. The deal breaker is she insists that three nights out of the week the dancers have to be male. That just won't do. Guess I better stick to writing on this forum.
