Range ideas needed!

I have a sand pit on my property that is just crying to become a range with a little work I could get it to about 400 yards. The pit was reclaimed recently so the backstop there and we use it for a makeshift range when we are bored. I want to get it set up to be a real nice range. The only thing I can’t really find and information on (that isn’t extremely expensive) is I want to be able to have a moving target to practice for yote hunting. So a moving target that can move up to say maybe 20+ mph that would run continuously so you could take multiple shots while it is on the move…

If you have any cool target ideas or shooting table plans or just cool pics of your favorite range please add them too. I'm starting from scratch so I'm open to anything.

Any recommendations, ideas, thoughts etc would be greatly appreciated.

We love to roll small propane tanks down a hill and see how many holes we can put in them, it's a real blast the first trip down! I should add some kind of disclaimer like don't do this it is stupid dangerous but then if you don't already know this the disclaimer won't help anyway!:usa:

LB you will defiantly want steel targets . I have a good supply of scrapper blades off of the county road graders. They replace them frequently this time of year and will usually give the pieces they pull off away. It is a abrasion resistant steel (with the same properties as armor plate). I try to shoot 1MOA targets so this works good for me. I use pieces of conveyor belt to suspend the steel over a frames made from rebar or saw horse.

I definitely like your idea of remote control vehicles and balloons. Just gotta get one with some good range and an auto-return feature... :)

2 challenges:

Moving targets

Moving targets @ 20 mph

You will need some good width to be able to do that and give yourself enough time to acquire target and shoot. You will need to get your moving mech down below ground level or it will get shot sooner or later.

FIRST thing I would do is to look at the caliber of guns you will use or COULD use. Then get a county map and go to Goggle maps and look what is down range of your location at a 45 degree angle from dead center on both sides. This will be your rang fan. You will need to put in some tall posts, paint them hunter orange so as folks will NOT shoot to the outside of your range fan.

You need to insure that your max range across the range fan will not put lead on someone elses property or worse, kill a cow, horse or enter into any kind of out building.

The range will be set up towards the backend of a 40 acre sand pit that is about 50 feet deep and the pit is surrounded by corn fields that are my father in laws. (This is also his pit) the wall that we would be shooting towards is a rather large area and it is in the corner in the pit. That said would that take care of the range fan?

Also the guns used for the moving target would be at the largest a .308. I'm sure I'll take out the 30.06 occasionally but not very often. Also the way the pit is set up we would be shooting from the ground or for longer shots (up to 400 yards) we would be on a ridge shooting down into the pit. I'll go and get some pictures of the location and post them on here so everyone can put their eyes on it.

Here is a google earth shot of it. The right and top side are banked and about 35 feet tall. The bottom where the woods meets the pit it the ridge that we can shoot from for longer shots.

I say dig a trench 50 or 100 yds. Find some surplus 6 ft. diameter concrete sewer pipe. Bury it and build a shooting station at one end and an access area at the other. You could build an outbuilding over the access points as well. Completely covert and noiseless....always wanted to do this.

I'm not a pro by any means but I "think" the "longest distance" calculations for rifles are done at 30 degrees.

Also, I know you are doing this on a budget so a lot of these thoughts are great when you have heavy equipment or unlimited funds but I think this range idea was supposed to be centered around CHEAP ideas for a moving target.

Just saying.... :)

I've always wanted to build something like a whack-a-mole game, have several plates that pop up at random spots for random amounts of time. Could cut them to look like pdogs or whatever.

For a moving target though, especially moving at 20mph, the simplest thing I can think of would be a pendulum swinging from an A-frame. It might have to be fairly tall, would take a bit of math to figure out all that. You'd have to lead it just the same as if it were moving across the ground, so the practice would be about the same.
