Long Distance up or down slope - who's done it?

What effect does a steep incline or decline to your target, normally have on your point of aim and trajectory?

Since I was a 60 gunner but like FOREVER ago, I don't even remember what adjustments I made other than just doing the "walk it to target" kind of thing and have NEVER done any long distance single shot kind of stuff on targets either considerably higher than my position or considerably lower.

What adjustments do you normally have to make for these types of shots?

I really do`nt know either.
I have seen range finders, I guess it`d be quite handy to have one.
Also "inclineamometers" that lets You sight the tool on the target then look at the angle.
If a person had a chart along it`d be quite easy to figure the math, incline, distance and trajectory for the load.
I am not fortunate to have iether of these toools.
Shooting a down hill slope to a herd of white tails. One real nice buck in the bunch.
Firing a pre 64 win. 30-06, 3-9 Redfield wide angle with a somewat of a range finder built in.
I put the two upper crosshairs on the deer, it would`nt even come close, it went to 600 yds by approximation.
Well, where do I put this shot, I looked at the horns, a rough calculation, 18" above its head, another approximation, five times the height above the head, a slight breeze, steady with no gusts which is unusual for eastern Montana, aimed slightly to the left, holding the height, took three breaths, hold, hooold, pressing the trigger, watching through the scope, well, I must have missed, lowered the rifle, looked out again and all of a sudden that deer started doing flipflops and cart wheels around the little meadow.
Walking down hill was fairly easy, smooth and sandy with a very nice bed of wild land grass, counting paces, making them almost as long as possible without straining, counted to 1,200 and was about 3/4s the way from the rock above where I took the shot from, quit counting, guessing about 1,800 yards.
The bullit, after examining the body, had dropped so far that it enterd about three to four inches above the briskit, right through the heart. I could`nt believe it, Looking up the slope to where I had shot from, I could barely see the rocks on that slight ledge.
I had been doing a lot of shooting previous to making this shot, missing deer that were way out there but never as far out as this one was, a very fortunate shot indeed.

Thanks Lib but at least to me, that doesn't break down to "point of aim". It's all just numbers and without carrying a damn calculator everywhere, what would his point of aim be without adjusting his scope and just "visually compensating" the shot? Above or below the target?

Some of the calculations that come across the screens are great for you experienced long distance guys but for us "close rangers", even WITH a lot of experience, translating the calculus you guys do for long shots is all just too damn "frenchie" for me to even WANT to catch up with and I need some simple english...

Long flat shots are one thing. Long sloped shot create different issues that I don't think I've seen discussed in here much is all.

Up hill or down you always aim low. Dad taught me this deer hunting, we live in hill country. How much depends on all that math :( I tended to rely on practice more than math, it's funner, almost as fun as walking in a 60!
The wife bought me one of those range finders that you punch in your ballistics and it figures your hold for you,
it's the cats ass for my math challenged brain! :usa:

 I'm with you JT. And you know what's funny, when I was in the Philippines for a company, I had 60 million dollars in raw materials (computer parts) spread throughout 3 facilities and 5 warehouse that I was responsible for. During meetings, I could name, almost to the penny, how many of almost any part we had and the value pretty much off the top of my head.

But turn around and ask me the total value of all of the same parts spread between the three facilities and I'd be running for a calculator.

Good with numbers, hoooooorible with math...

Fortunately though, what I lacked in math skills I more than made up for with just rugged, dashing good looks...
