I have decided that my next project will be a 22 rifle. I have had a couple in the past but am currently without one. I am mainly considering it for plinking and maybe a little target shooting. I have been considering a 10/22 but am open to other manufacturers and models. What do you guys have or what would you reccomend?
I am still using the 10/22 I got in 1977. They are hard to beat. I would be tempted though to look at one of the high end bolt actions used by biathalon skiers. They are incredibly accurate.
I'm not a big Ruger fan but the 10/22 is one I'd pick. There are so many aftermarket parts available you'll have no trouble making it yours.
My nephew shoots a Volquartsen rifle;
It is dead on after 15 years of abuse and 10's of thousands of rounds. They put out whole rifles and they sell about any part you could need to upgrade the performance on a 10/22 and they are simple to work on. They are local to me, used to be able to go there and tell them what you wanted but they don't sell out of the new factory so with their rise in the field we lost a gun shop, it's been worth the sacrifice! :usa:
I'm with JT, never cared for ruger but the 10/22 is one exception I might make. They are in the same category as AR15's and 1911's, you can get anything for them anywhere and the sky is the limit. On the plus side you have several options so you don't have to go with ruger to have a 10/22. I've been eyeballing one of the magnum research graphite barreled offerings for a long time now, also available in .22wrm.
As JT mentioned, volquartsen is THE name mentioned when someone speaks of top tier .22, I don't personally know of any better. Good don't come cheap though.
Marlin is another good choice, a bit of an underdog behind the 10/22 and does not have the cult level of aftermarket, but both my 70 and 70p have 30 years on them and still run great. If I can ever get them back from my brother.
Rem 597 had its problems with bad mags early on but has since been fixed. I had a lemon with a horridly mis-drilled bore, but I understand they have come into their own and are generally considered good rifles. Might want to get a second opinion on that though.
I got the opportunity to purchase a Remington Nylon 66 in the Cherokee model.
According to the code it was manufactured in May of 62. I do`nt know how many rounds has gone down the bore but it is deadly accurate.
I also have the Ruger 10-22 in the target master. fun to shoot.
had a henry in 22 cal for a week and sold it. many failures to eject and I didn't care for the flimsy sights.
take a look at CZ for a 22cal.They are sweet guns
My favorite is a 22 semiauto weatherby, but they don't make them anymore and used ones go for 3x what I paid for mine in 1976
