Wife was invited by Susan LaPierre to go Dove hunting with here when she is in Texas this month. She has never been, so any suggertions on a Dove gun? And now not going to spend a fortune...
To be honest I have never hunted dove, but I would think something light and fast pointing, probably in 20 gauge. I would think maybe an over/under, since they avoid the problems of a side by side possibly cross patterning. Probably someone out there with more experience and better advice. Let your wife try a number of different types and find what works best for her. Also, what else could she use it for? Quail, pheasants, or partridge?
As a kid I would sit in a hemp patch and shoot dove all day long with a single shot 20 ga, my little brother used a 410 and got his share. I tried a 12ga but you had to let them get some range or it would destroy them. I'm not sure what shooting conditions you'll be dealing with but all we had to do was sit, about every 15-20 minutes a batch would try to fly in to eat the hemp seed. it was like hunting ducks over decoys only you didn't need to call them.
I use a 20ga. SKB auto with Improved or Modified choke #8's, have also used the 12ga. with Modified for the 45-55yd shots over the pond. I do like the auto's as the little birds are fast and weave all over like a drunk with a .20 bac :pinch: Hemp fields and water are great places to hunt and the best time for me was late afternoon (Hemp field) to dusk. (Water) Good practice for the early Teal season. Have a good and safe hunt :cowboy:
