Nice job Sharkey, I can tell you had your coffee this morning. Your thinking is a lot better this AM than mine was last night over a scotch and soda. I knew my answer would stir the conversation.

Colt only here or on lightfighter would I put forth that answer, says a lot about the way I feel about you guys on the sight.

Cowboy- Grand Rapids, Michigan and it never even made the news other than three to four sentences. That's because nobody got shot or injured and it was on the wrong side of town.

Pooky -You never know what it would take, like Sharky articulated so well there are thousands of pieces of information that you have to factor in. And I really hate that word Hero, no one wants to be a hero. Everybody is cut from different cloth with different skills , wants and desires. These are what motivate us in all our decisions in life.

Magi- Your views of LEO is obviously a result of all the poor press on the national news of late. If you had more first hand experience I think you would have a better opinion of them, I work closely day to day with my local department and train with some on a monthly basis, they like everyone else have some really great people and some less than optimal people in there profession. Just as Sharky said and maybe the most important thing he wrote, And then, however it goes down, you have to live with yourself later - if you make it.

I really enjoy scenario questions. I get a kick reading the responses, there is so much variety from so many different perspectives.
Talking down bad guys? Not to sure that is a good idea for me, considering I piss people off just saying hello. I wish I could do something like that. Then again, the bad guys might just off themselves so they don't have to listen to me anymore.

In the end, it is all speculation. If I really could describe exactly what would happen, then do precisely that with the predicted outcome I chose. Hell, I'd buy my lottery ticket and retire.
Fun discussion though.

As Colt pointed out: "No battle plan survives contact with the enemy."

Without taking the legal aspects of the problem into into question:

I believe firmly that once a person has brandished a weapon, taken a fighting stance, or even begins an attack, they've lost any expectation they might have reasonably had about their own safety. That was long-winded. You attack someone, you're no longer safe. If you're holding a potentially deadly weapon, your death is on the table. Not everyone believes this, and even if you do, it's difficult to decide exactly who deserves to die.

One winter night during Dad's college years, he heard footsteps in his apartment. He took a look out the bedroom door and saw a man looking through his possessions in the living room. He quietly loaded his Ithaca Model 37 12 gauge shotgun and walked out to the living room. The man was lifting up his tv and turning toward the door. Dad pointed the gun at him and told him to stop. The guy drops the tv and charges him.

There was a split second to make a decision: shoot, or don't.

He pushed the safety button into position to block the trigger, and gave the guy a solid butt-stroke to the head. That wasn't quite the fight stopper he had planned it to be. A wrestling match ensued.

Hearing the commotion, as the two struggled against each other, his neighbors had come out of their apartments and were just watching through the doorway. "Help!" he says. Everyone just stares dumbly the entire time as he slowly moves the fight out to the hallway. The gawking neighbors follow them down the stairs and out the door into the snow. Dad finally got the guy pinned and held him there until the police arrived. He'd called for help a few more times, but no one had responded.

The police arrived to see my father, in his underwear, holding a very dirty and drunken young man to the ground at gun point. "Why didn't you kill him?" the police man asked. "You had every right."

Dad says: "I didn't think he deserved to die over a television I don't even watch."

Very few people really deserve to die.

The most common reason for anyone to fall into that category is trying to injure or kill someone else. That's my opinion anyway.

If I were in the situation described by the original poster, (if I thought I had time) I would have taken out my phone, dialed 911, stayed on the line just long enough to tell them the location. Then I'd hang up. I'd walked quietly up to a position where I could engage one without the other having a clear view while leaving them an unobstructed line to the door. I'd point my pistol at the one closest to me and say: "The police are on their way." If they failed to grasp the situation, I'd add: "I won't shoot if you leave now." If either of them pointed their guns in any direction that resembled a line of fire toward me, I'd fire.

That's a rough plan anyway. It could be modified as needed, with more talking (most preferable), different positioning (meh), or even just by firing first (easier in the execution, but more difficult in the after-action).

If I didn't get hurt seriously in an exchange of gunfire, I'd secure the other guys' weapons, ask the cashier if she was ok, and then assess the wounds of the would be robbers. If they weren't dead, I'd do what I could to help them survive, without endangering myself or the cashier.

9mm 147 grain JHP bullets from a five inch barrel applied to any portion of the body should be enough to make anyone reconsider the life choices that brought them to their current predicament. That is to say, I wouldn't expect a lot of trouble from anyone with even one wound like that, but I'm not stupid.

Can you tell that I've thought about this before?
