I caught a few minutes of " Life Below Zero" on the Nat Geo channel the other day, and one of the guys living in the bush was hunting Caribou with either an AR10T with a 26 inch barrel or the RRA Varminter with the same. He missed one when his firing pin froze! Because it was too cold. I am guessing the lube he had wasn't up to 45 below zero. He got the next one though. A nice shot, looked to be about 300 yards.

Now I'm going to have to see that.
You'd think someone living like that would consider the proper lube. Then again I've never had the joy of being -45 so maybe it's not so simple as that.

I caught that, thought it was odd his feet were his transportation. He pulled that caribou home in a sled!
I've spent a good amount of time in -20 to -30 in my young and dumb years, I quickly found no lube in or on the bolt of my 22 was the answer. BreakFree was a brand new product then though, lots of good stuff for the cold now, I'm done testing though!

Cold weather lubricant definitely would help. The guideline I always heard was that in places where it gets freezing cold, it's better to leave your rifle outside if possible.

That explains why Grandpa left his shotgun outside by the grain bin all the time, at least that explains half the year!

I think the guy was an idiot and I don't a long term series with him in happening. If you are so dumb as to not to consider lube in -30 and below conditions, not likely you are going to make it over the long run.

I have been watching it and he was using some kind of an AR configuration but I could tell for sure what exactly it was.

This like most survival shows reeks with dumb.

With all due respect, Cowboy, If indeed he is actually living in those conditions( which may not be the case, as these shows always make it seem worse than it is). Northern Alaska weeds out the real idiots within one winter. In that environment, he would have maybe one chance to learn from his mistakes, maybe not. He says it froze, but he may not have inserted the pin all the way in to the BCG before inserting the retaining key. I did that once and learned my lesson.
The point is, its a staged reality show like they all are, which means the "firing pin freeze" might have been staged as well. The kid is living his dream, and the money from Nat Geo probably paid for that AR10 or whatever it is. If it wasn't staged, at least the kid lived to learn his lesson. I just take it with a grain of salt. I had a friend who was on a survival show based in Alaska five years ago or so. After listening to his stories, it's pretty evident the real world takes a back seat to doing stuff to increase ratings. About the only survival reality show I put much stock into is "Survivor Man". Les on that show is the real deal, and not afraid to admit failure. I only stopped to watch a little bit of "Zero" when I saw the AR with the long stainless barrel.

I lived and worked in Alaska for 11 years... Was a pipeliner.... Worked outside...
I never went shooting at more than 25 bellow...... And didn't have a simi auto out there..... Probably not the best choice other than a simple blow back gun....
I would wipe every thing dry and use some graphite on certain areas..... I never had a problem..... and at 45 bellow and colder should not make much difference in mechanical function.... Metallurgy maybe.. Yes....... When you came back in... Condensation would develop on all the metal parts.... You would have to strip down and wipe everything dry.... a hair dryer helped......
There were products coming out at the time... Silicon and Molly based lubes... But I never used them....
I worked 6 years in Prudhoe Bay......and 20 bellow with no wind was a nice day..... I will tell you.. When your out in these temperatures.. You can't be standing around..... You need to have everything to be ok... And you eat a lot.... You convert a lot of energy.... Then if the wind comes up.. It gets real bad........
In the 11 years... Working project by project... 5 years in the interior and 6 years in P Bay... I only missed two days of work because weather on the projects I was on... And one of those days because of rain and mud... And one day I almost shut the gang down because of wind....but didn't... We were awesome......

I concur.

I did not address that, almost but did not. Few if any reality shows are in fact reality. But no matter if that boy does not know enough to use the proper lube he does not belong out there. If you noticed his clothing, the blood all over his hands etc, either the cold does not affect him and nothing freezes and dried blood all over your clothing does not attract unwanted friends or he really lives in a holiday hotel somewhere.
