Getting ready to get some range time with my AR 15/AR10. Want to reduce the number of rds fired not just due to cost but there is or should technology helpers and therein is my question.

I am thinking buying and using the laser: www.midwayusa.com/product/124432/ssi-sig...er?cm_vc=subv1711848

SSI Sight-Rite Laser Bore Sight .243 Winchester, 7mm-08, .308 Winchester

1) Lasser bore sighting: Good idea, bad idea, just OK?

2) Other brands to look at if this is a good approach?

3) Other?

I have a laser bore sight for my AR15's. It helps, but not really necessary. A laser is a straight line, which a bullet trajectory is not. It will usually get you on the target.

I can do just as well with a target and my eye, that is basically what I end up doing. Neither will line up true with the bore.
The cartridge style was the biggest hassle because you have to jack the action to move it around and check, when I did it could move the dot as much as 12 inches in 20 foot. I put a witness mark on it and would get a different spot for every position.
The Bushnell has the same issue but can be spun to trace a circle and get an idea where center is, but then I can eyeball down the bore and get a spot at 20 feet much faster, and cheaper, it's all math and voodoo from there.
For me a few extra rounds is worth the frustration these devices have caused me. I'll keep watching for one of the old style bore sight tools on the used market till I hear someone say the lasers are as good. My :twocents: on the two I have.

Well guys I had hoped the technology had moved us forward a long ways but does not seem to have had the impact I had thought, guess old school is still good school.

Albeit I generally zero my weapon in about 5 rds or so from cold.

One time I spent dang near and entire afternoon...1 rd, adjust, in the 10 ring, 3 rd out edge, 4 rd in the 8 ring...WTH???

Over and over and over again.

Finally discovered the sights were moving on me from recoil.

I have used various laser boresighters, like those that insert into the barrel front, or insert in chamber, or the magnetic type on the end of barrel. I was disappointed with all of them.

The best approach for me is to find an obvious target spot about 100 yards away like a V in a tree, a window frame corner of a house, a car part, etc. I then place the rifle upper in a gun vice, look down the inside of the barrel to place the target in the center of the barrel. Then I adjust the crosshairs to the same target. If I take special care to place the target in the exact center of the barrel, I have always been on paper at 100 yards the first shot.

Save your money and don't buy a laser boresighter. I also thought I could use the laser to check a zero the begining of each hunting season however the laser wasn't close to center, but the rifle was still accurately sighted in so the laser gave me false/wrong information.

My neighbor has a big round thermometer on his house which is about 60 yards away. It's perfect for bore sighting as it almost fills the view through the barrel. I've always been 7 ring or better at 100 yards after sighting in that way.
Of course, last time I shot my AR-10, my scope was coming loose and I chased it, so now I need to re-bore sight it.

Bore sighting is to get you on paper. If you are already there, bore sighting isn't going to do anything more, the rest is up to you. I've got several really nice bore sighting tools simply because new optics on occasion will be far enough off that I can't guess which side of the paper the bullet is missing.
After that gets solved, I never take them out of the box.

One thing that will help you is to record your zero settings. When things shot loose, you can just crank it back and be pretty darn close if not exactly where you were before.

See if these videos help :) It might be a little more challenging with an AR. Good luck!
