We used to have a dynamite plant up in this area that also made nitroglycerin. It blew up in the early 50's. A fertilizer plant is basically making an explosive combination that is about 1/2 as powerful as TNT when mixed with an accelerant. I would have been 10 counties away if it I had heard about that fire. I can't believe they didn't have a plan to evacuate the whole town.
My prayers out to the firefighters and everyone else killed and wounded.
I used to live about 2 blocks from a plant in our town. They did have a plan, I'm sure these guys did as well with the response they had, I happen to be up last night, it was amazing to see the quantity of first responders and how fast they were there, God bless them all.
CNN showed what a disconnect they have with middle and small town America, the anchor just couldn't seem to accept that the Firemen were not on any shift but all volunteer. He kept asking relatives if there loved one was "on duty" when it happen. You could tell the concept was foreign to him; how could there have been no one on duty when the whole department had responded??????
On call? What do you mean on call? I want to know how many were on duty. None? You don't know what I am asking. How many were on duty at the fire station? None? I mean how many were working at the fire station. What do you mean they all had to be paged. Was it a holiday?
This is no joke. I heard this almost word for word (going from memory) from an MSNBC reporter. They don't have a clue what rural life is like. My wife came out and asked me what was so funny. Good thing I have a DVR so I could rewind it for her.
Glad I was watching local news. I'm in Temple about an hour away. West is a great little town. Old Czech community. If you find yourself on I35 going through West make sure to stop in at the Czech Stop - bakery known for their Kolaches. There are pictures of the explosion taken from their parking lot.
As with small towns around the country, they are hard working, God fearing folks that will pull through this. All the local communities stepped up. The Red Cross was turning away blood donors as lines to donate were approaching four hours.
One report of looting but I suspect that will get nipped in the bud right quick.

BTDT many many times on my weekly commute from Ft Hood to Dallas.
As for looting, dumb, just plain dumb, everyone knows everyone in town, all of their children and all of their names, if its a foreigner, sure his body will turn up sooner or later...
maps.google.com
type in West Texas and take a look folks, this town is not even a wide spot in the road.
The response of the volunteer firemen, the outpouring of aid and support since it happened. That right there is a lot of what is good about our country.
