Late in the war the Japanese attempted to copy the M1, but I don't think they ever built it. I'm guessing FALSE.

The M1 Garrand was originally chambered in .276, T or F

False,
The first M1 Garand was 30 cal. after testing (I think in 1927 or 1928) they did make a .276 gas operated model a couple years later.

True or false
The Springfield Armory's location was originally scouted by George Washington. (A great museum if anyone ever gets the chance to go to Springfield, MA. IIRC it has the largest collection of shoulder fired weapons in the world).

I think the Garand was originally chambered in 276 Peterson and changed to 30 cal by request of the Army. Maybe I am wrong, It was my understanding that was the case. I will see if I can find documentation.

This is what I found. It's about.com so....It's the internet it must be true.

His first design, the M1922, was ready for testing in 1924. This possessed a caliber of .30-06 and featured a primer-operated breech. After inconclusive testing against other semi-automatic rifles, Garand improved the design, producing the M1924. Further trials in 1927, produced an indifferent outcome, though Garand did design a .276 caliber, gas-operated model based on the results. In the spring of 1928, the Infantry and Cavalry boards ran trials which resulted in the .30-06 M1924 Garand being dropped in favor of the .276 model.

So I think we may be right? True and false? Got me.

Why wait that long?

Howa was servicing and making parts for M1 carbines and garands on contract during the Korean war and later produced them both for JDF. Not many of the Howa garands have been imported and the few floating around have lost their collector value due to the "it's not usgi it must be junk", so most were pirated for parts.
Howa receivers are forged and generally have a fit & finish quality a blasphemous order above the coveted American steel, which if it saw service from 1950 - 1963ish it may have howa parts in it anyway.
The garand was not popular with the JDF for obvious reasons and the Japanese built ammo was grossly underloaded making the full size rifle even more pointless. Naturally the little dudes spent more on the M1 carbine which did make it over here.
