Hello Men,

First off, I want to apologize for using the term "buddy" since apparently, in some parts of the country, this COULD be construed as derogatory. There's not too many places in the country I haven't been in one capacity or another and I apparently MISSED that one... :laugh:

I even watched a guy getting his face kicked in over calling some guys "dude" which I've never really liked anyway but no matter. (it was kinda funny too because the more they hit him, the more he screamed DUDE DUDE so it was just a vicious circle for a little while there)

Allow me a little leeway here as I learn that not EVERY term I use may be always "well received" since, due to the fact that I essentially live inside a bubble within a larger one, I may not always be "up" on the geographical language trends.

Having been through extreme cold weather training in two different countries, we kept ourselves protected by using "the buddy system".

In water and ice rescue with the fire department, whenever possible, we worked "the buddy system.

Scuba diving - buddy system.

Inside a house fire, when possible - yep. Buddy system - and I could go on and on.

I did NOT mean it in the way that apparently it is taken in some places.

I just wanted to say that if I have EVER inadvertently offended anyone by using the term "bud" or "buddy" when answering, joking or responding to a post, I sincerely and respectfully apologize as I had NO idea that it could be taken as offensive.

Also, if anyone ever catches me using another term like that and I accidentally offend anyone, please, shoot me a quick PM and I'll edit it immediately with a sincere apology.

If I ever MEAN to disrespect another man, it's usually pretty clear as I've never been a shy one about speaking my mind in ANY venue but if I do it accidentally, let me know and I'll take care of it quickly.

We are all men here and I'm the VERY first to say I make mistakes sometimes but am always happy to straighten them out - when it is warranted and I'm usually a pretty objective guy and try to look at things from all angles whenever possible.

This was not any kind of rant and I'm actually a bit amused at how out of touch I've become sometimes but hey, with our members spread all over this great country, these things will happen once in a while and the VERY best thing we can all do, is bring it up asap and get it straightened out so we can all start moving forward again.

And that's good to know about you, since "Dude" is one of my favorite expressions. I'll refrain from using it here, Du...oops, sorry. :laugh:

Very nicely put and I'm glad you wrote it, so I didn't have to! We all probably have or need to apologize for some remarks that we have made. The "Buddy System" was also in effect for a lot of things that I grew up with, but, Oh how times change. Please try and just use screen names when responding to post.

You know, I can usually tell a persons intent by how they say things, not the words they say. And I certainly haven't heard anything that could be construed as insulting from any of you. Now if you start using "bung ferret" my pet weasel may take offense.

I wonder is "condescension" is ok all over the country because I seem to get a lot of that... ;)

Respectfully, can someone tell me where "Dude or Buddy" is offensive? (just for my own edification) I remember years ago "good buddy" referred to "gay" in the trucker world.

I've no doubts on the original post but I've been in most parts of the country and have never seen that. I know in some parts of the south "Dude" was seen as coming from someone from the west coast but I never thought of it as an offense.

Buddy I've heard all over the south. I also know some Texans call every younger women "darling" or "sweetheart" which in some places may be an issue.

Just curious.

When I was an angry teenager, I used to search and find any sorts things that I could use as a reason to fight someone. Including and not limited to the following:

"he looked at me wrong"
"he accidentally stepped on my shoe"
"he was talking to my girl"
"he said he had a sexual encounter with my mother"
"he cut me off"
"he called me bro"

:laugh: So If someone who gets butt hurt over something somebody says. I think they're just looking for a fight. Just like how I used to all the time.

Talk is just talk. No reason to hurt anyone or get offended. B)

In general I use both terms although infrequently. Depends on which generation your speaking to, and the subject matter. Good communication results. I agree with Sis, the intent is always apparent otherwise communication is not occurring. As a rule I push people with my words; try to get them to think rather than act, I have been known to sell ice to eskimo's. I consider it a gift, my wife not so much. No matter how you look at it, free speech is our right. And as a rule any infringement on mine or anyone else's pegs out my speedometer pretty quick. I consider low tolerance of someone's speach patterns as a slight infringement , and a lack of intelligence on the part of the listener.
