I can vouch for the friendly, sensible atmosphere! I spent a year and a half doing project management on TexDot contracts for a guy out of Minnesota. I spent time in over 40 towns from Victoria in the south to Shamrock in the north and felt welcome everywhere I went except possibly where a few home town favorites were second place bidders.
I noticed when it comes to bureaucratic bull they are much less tolerant than most states. A change order that would involve 12 people and a weeks time in Wisconsin would take a 1 minute conversation in Texas. Nobody was in huge rush but things got done!
If I could tolerate that South Texas heat I'd be there now!

Victoria is not far from where I used to go crash once in a while on a little ranch in Goliad - half-way between Beeville and Victoria if I remember right. Nice quiet area... :)

(it was actually 200+ acres but down there, that is a VERY little ranch)

I travelled that road from Goliad through Victoria and almost to Houston a bunch putting curb ramps along the way. Only problem I had that I didn't get local help with was the damn road blocks for immigration checks. I didn't realize they checked that far from the border. They don't tell you when they are open so planing the move of a concrete crew during the work day can end up being expensive, concrete gets hard fast in that heat! :censored:

The man who owned the ranch I would stay at sometimes would also have me drive him to San Antonio so he could have some city drinkin fun now and again. I always used to get a kick out of driving through "China Grove". The town the Doobie Brothers did the song about... :)

I do remember seeing a China Grove and wondering if it was the same place. That area has a kick ass locale music scene, never thought I'd care for Lyle Lovette til I heard his stuff they don't play on top 40 radio! Doesn't Willie Nelson hang around that neighborhood?

Won't be long before we're there.

My wife is ready to move and so am I.

Good thing is when we sell the 3 br 2 ba house we have in Maryland we can buy a nice homestead in Texas. DC dollars do nothing but inflate the prices in Maryland.

Oh, to be able to shoot again

Plus I hear heli-hunting for hogs is the fad these days.

Dunno Bud. Like I said, we would just pass through there.

I broke down once in a little town called Lufkin. Carb trouble on my scooter. The people at the motel 6 let me pull it right inside the room since it was everything I owned at the time. Got ahold of a guy from Nacadoches who showed up the next day with the parts I needed, his wife and a 6 pack and then I followed him back to his shop and did some tuning.

Later that day a mess O folks showed up on their way to some Tattoo guy's birthday party in Moscow Texas and asked me to ride along so I did. Won some money arm wrestling and got to judge the "female body parts" contest, crashed for the night and then moved on.

Poor areas. Friendly folks...
