Help with bench vise please

I am going to build an addition to my reloading workbench. It will be at ninety degrees to the existing bench and protrude out into the room so that it can be worked from both sides. I want to have a vise on the new bench. This vise will be used exclusively for cleaning, maintaining and repairing various firearms. Any suggestions as to what type or which model of vise to consider. I have a coarse pipe vise in my shop but I would think that there would be something better than that available. Thanks in advance.

Look into a machinist vice or other fine thread vice vs the typical corase threads found on most vices. The advantage is smoother operation and less slop, more precise and you want one with Aluminum jaws or add on ALum jaws to keep from damaging the metal of a gun.

Typical mechanics vices are quite crude, meant to be beat on etc. Most likely a USA made Wilton would have what you are looking for, you also might try looking under fine wood working vices...

You can always make a magazine blank to lock into the vise and then mount your rifle to that. I have one for my AR15 and intend on making one for my ar10 when it gets here.

I would exercise caution on that. Not saying do not do it, but that is for LIGHT DUTY ONLY. Starting torquing on the barrel at 75 lbs and you can tweak the lower and mag well, not much maybe, but it does not take much.

I see no reason to not use it and in fact think it is a GREAT idea, but when when any torque load starts climbing into foot lbs it may be time to properly set your weapon into a vice.

having said that, what did you use to build the blank? I like the idea for a lot of uses...you get a thankyou for that, just give the info on the blank you used

Excellent information. Thanks! I will look into a machinist vise with interchangable jaws. I also like the idea of being able to mount
a rifle onto a mag blank chucked up in the vise for simple maintenance, etc...

You can buy one at Midway or brownells as part of a armors kit. Or you can just use a crappy bent magazine and fill it full of resin/bondo and then take a dremel tool to the mag release catch hole, which is what I did. I have friends that have made then out of billet, and Cowboy your right it is just for light work, but it does this really well, cleaning, mounting etc.
