Thanks guys! I actually don't owe this bit of knowledge to the military...My Old man taught me this one. He was a hunting guide on a big game-ranch in South Texas when I was born, and he would have his clients confirm their zeros first thing when they arrived...He made commission and gained a good reputation for future clients off of a successful hunt, so it behooved him to assure that his clients could hit what they were aiming at. He picked this technique up along the way somewhere and adapted it as his own, because he had a frequent issues with clients showing up with damaged optics... apparently it's a common problem.
