I loaded up 20-6.8SPC rounds to try out the IMR8208 powder I just got. Per the Hogdon reloading site I'm using 28.0 gr of powder with a 115gr Hornady HPBT. I will shoot this load out of a T/C Contender pistol with 14" barrel.
Note: this powder sure does go through the measure nice.

After decades of playing with dozens of AR 15 rifles in .223 and recently in .300 Whisper, I got myself all excited about the 6.8 SPC cartridge because it was a more powerful PRACTICAL cartridge for the AR 15 platform
PLUS,
it was FACTORY LOADED by Remington.
So I went out and bought myself a new RRA 16" AR in 6.8.
Then I went down to my local gun shop to pick up some 6.8 Rem ammo and virgin 6.8 SPC brass.
OMFG!!!! They wanted more for the 6.8 SPC ammo than they did for .308 Win ammo.
I bought 100 rds of the precious 6.8 SPC, and yes, the caliber is cool and potentially a much better choice for CQB than the good ol' poodle shootin' 5.56.
However, since factory 6.8 SPC ammo costs more than .308 Win, I decided to stick with the more powerful and much more versatile .308 Win in one of my AR 10s.
And if I want a lighter / faster bullet, I can down load .308 Win with the lighter 110 - 130 GR sp .30 cal bullets. But you can't UPload the 6.8 SPC to match .308 Win.
I agree completely! My two (dumber than me) brothers each have an AR-15 in 6.8 caliber. They seldom shoot them because of the ammo cost. I was smarter and went the AR-10 direction. I can buy surplus GI 7.62 ammo and shoot mine much cheaper.
I do have two 6.8 barrels for my Contenders. A carbine barrel and a 14" pistol barrel. I reload for them so ammo cost isn't a worry. The 6.8 SPC is an excellent pistol cartridge for long range pistol silhouette. I got the carbine barrel just to have one.
When I went to buy my AR...I looked at all the weapons out there and did tons of reading on all the calibers....I think that is why I went with the 7.62x51....
The ammo for the 6.8 and the 6.5 were just not available like the .308 and cost was unreal...that was several years ago and it is still the same now....I think the 6.8 is a great round but just not practical for the standard shooter....and if the SHTF...the 6.8 will be just a club for most....
I think if I were to go with something for my M-15....I would go with the AK round...
7.62x39...not the best on accuracy but ammo is cheap and readily available..but that is just me....
Not knocking anything...just stating my thoughts...
