I've been working up a load for my .308 semi auto for long range and varmint shooting. I think this might do the trick! Can't upload my pic. Moderator lists it as too large. It's 5rounds at 100 yards .317" group. 168gr Nosler HPBT, 42.9gr IMR 8208, 2507fps MV.

168gr for varmints? Must be some pretty big varmints in your neck of the woods . Seriously, excellent work. I might have to make a run using 8208.
How do you combat the fist round flyer? I always have the first round impact 1/2 MOA higher than the following 4 shots.
That's known as a "cold bore shot." There really is no way to combat it. From the way your question is worded, I'm guessing you keep good data for your log/dope book. If the load consistantly fires 1/2 MOA high for the first round, make the appropriate sight adjustment to your optic to compensate. For subsequent rounds, return to your original zero.
IMR 8208 XBR was introduced early last year. From what I've read, it's very similar to IMR 820BR that was produced up to the mid 90's. It's a fairly quick powder, as evidienced by the OP's given load of 42.9gr. Here's a link to loading data from Hodgdon's site:
