With all the secrecy issues coming to light in the news I think it is time we all try to help clear the air.
In recent years I have gotten a few details out of my father that I feel need to be disclosed or at least looked at and understood. My father was a photo interpreter stationed at SAC in the early 1960's. He was involved in TALENT and KEYHOLE so his clearance was a high level TS. He has told me several things that I have never seen in history books. One was how his unit was expelled from the Philippines when their government realized they were targeting Vietnam. When the Philippine government realized they were targeting Vietnam for bombing his fellow interpreters were escorted to the plane by armed Philippine troops, I watch and read a bunch about the cold war and have never heard of this. His unit then worked out of an airbase in Vietnam itself. He is convinced the government didn't want to avoid war there. His job was to look at the U-2 photos and find military targets. He has always felt that if the American public were aware of the targets that were not hit they would have booted Kennedy right away. He talks about locating ships full of AA missiles and artillery, he followed this equipment to mass storage facilities but it was still not targeted. They were never placed on the target list until deployed, WHY?????? He has many stories about things that should have been targets in a war environment but were left off the list due to orders from on high.
He was brought down to Texas weeks before the Cuban missile crisis. He saw and interpreted the pictures of missiles on soviet ships, watched the construction of the bases knowing exactly what they were for. He has never understood why we have been left with the impression that it was a surprise. He swears up and down that the timeline and details given in the historical record is full of falsehoods from who actually found the missiles to when they were found, according to him it was an Air Force program with the CIA only dealing with their reports, he always gets pissed because his unit doesn't get credit. Why would all this still need to be secret? I cannot convince him to speak with a historian on the subject, he is sure it would put him in jail.
Because of my Fathers high clearance and the unit I started with I was picked for some unusual duties for an 11B. I got to be a training dummy used to teach small unit tactics to some Contra "officers". I watched the Iran contra hearings and never heard a thing about this. There were CIA officers that held positions in our Brigade HQ, this was not supposed to happen by law. We trained Mujahedeen fighters to use stinger missiles in the summer of 1984. The historical records I can find claim this never happen till 1986? About 2 months after this training I was made to sit down in our safe room and look at picture after picture of Arab looking people and asked if I recognized any of them, some looked like the guys we trained but I wasn't sure so kept my mouth shut. I never heard the places or the people mentioned in the public hearings. When I was getting ready to ETS I was approached by a young Lt. and asked if I wanted a job when I got out. He claimed it was for a private company that guarded oil wells in central America and that they needed guys with my training. He gave me a contact number for a retired MSgt. but I threw it away. After I was home for a week this guy called me at my parents house. How did he get my info and why? The impression and experience I left with was that the CIA was deeply imbedded in our military.
Thirty years later I hear about all this domestic spy work going on and have to wonder, is it too late to clean out the spy nest? Are they exploiting the "terror threat" to gain even more power? I hate to think about the damage it could do but I really think it is time to clean house in our government, a major spring cleaning! It is much more than just one presidents administration, it appears to be an out of control culture of secrecy.
I would urge anyone that has any suspitions to air them now, while we can. Take Liberty back by airing the truth and supporting those that do.
