I like the thought of having a modular rifle like the 901. The reality would be quite different, I'm sure.
As for military applications, I don't think the intent is to have Joe hump two uppers, plus ammo and mags. Rather, one of the uppers would stay in the arms room while the other is mounted to the rifle and the Soldier would be given one or the other based on his part of the unit's mission.
The only way I can see carrying two uppers is if they're the same caliber. Fr'instance - A sniper carries a 16" .308 carbine while moving to his ORP. Once in the ORP, he transitions to a 20" precision upper and optic and then moves out to his hide.

Hey - Toting an M16A2, basic load AND packing an M24, optic and ammo in a drag bag jerry-rigged to my ruck wasn't fun. I would've loved to have had the kind of tactical flexibility the kids have today when I was behind the scope.
