A few days ago, I found out that Armalite was going to offer their version of the AR10A. The main difference between the current B model and the A model is it will have the original upper and lower receiver arctitechture. The upshot of it means that the AR10A will accept the original waffle style mag and...PMAGS!
Armalite intends to make the formal introduction of this new line of rifles during SHOT.
I have a PDF for Tech Note 101 explaining the differences between the B and A models, which isn't on Armalite's website yet. How do I post a PDF?
I've been thinking about this since I read the tech note, and I still can't help but wonder why Armalite is making a 10A.
It sounds as if they want a product that uses PMAGs, but it would seem to be easier and less expensive to persuade Magpul to tool up and make waffle mags for the 10B. So I guess there's some commercial consideration: Perhaps they feel the 10B is less marketable in LE and Mil markets because of the M14 derived mag. Hmmmm.
This looks like a case of the mountain coming to Mohammed.
I'm getting the gut feeling this is a step towards transitioning to the other mag pattern. Just like the forward assist non-issue, far too many people carry on about the armalite using a different mag. we all know it's a non issue, but with the increase in competition in the market and none of them adopting armalites mag pattern, it was just a matter of time.
Now we will see "will this A upper or lower work with my B lower or upper".
aww heck with it, I'm just gonna go with the flow...
Now we will see "will this A upper or lower work with my B lower or upper"./
The short answer is no. There are some differences between the uppers and lowers that won't allow a user to mix-n-match.
At first, I thought the same thing as 13fcolt - that eventually Armalite is going to phase out the B model. But after reading Tim Rooker's and Mark Westrom's comments in Barf.com's industry forum, I'm not so sure. I think the (re)introduction of the A is simply a move to gain more market share and give the consumer a broader choice in .308 ARs.
I was going through my emails from shot shot....I can't believe it...
They Did it...Man...I have to say I am surprised...Mark was one of the "last Hold outs"...but I figured it was coming...Don't know where that leaves the rest of us...but Still...I love my AR-10...I always thought he wouldn't budge on the Mag issue....Oh well...I guess we all have to join the "Main Stream" at some point...and Conform to the Norm....
I wonder if they are Giving Trade ins...
or Up Grades...Hint Hint. :pinch: Uncle ArmaLite.....

I've been thinking about this a while, and I don't think it matters. While I'd love to be able to use waffle mags the net effect would be zero.
Our "B" 10s are still supported, and that's good, but when I buy a gun I fully expect that it will outlive the manufacturer. My Uzi and M-1 carbine are no less useful for having been made by companies that effectively no longer exist.
Just make sure you've got plenty of mags and expendables.
