I'm waiting for the gunsmith to finish with my new AR-10 4BNMF, a national match. I'll use it mostly for hunting paper here in Las Vegas...at the Clark County Shooting Park (200 yard range) and at Boulder City where they have a 1,000 yard range. But, every firearm I have gets used hunting and we've got a pig hunt lined up in Texas for December, so it will go. For most of my hunting career--usually elk and deer in Colorado--I've used a .300 Weatherby, both Mark 5 actions with one on a sweet mesquite stock and the other, stainless on a plastic stock to toss around. Took the plastic Weatherby to South Africa and brought down 10 plains animals with 12 shots. Best shot 410 yards on an Impala. Also shoot a .444 Marlin lever action for bear and brush hunting. With the .300 Wby, I knew where the bullet would be at any range from 50 to 300 yards.
So the AR is a major departure. Bought it at Hinterlands and I must say they delivered. Fast shipping and a price better than anyone on Gunbroker dot com and better than the factory...where it was out of stock. Smart customer service guys who knew their stock. I'm mating it with a Leupold scope, all my scopes are Leupolds. Previous experience with AR-type was at Uncle Sam's behest. Was among the first to train with M16 in the states. Transitioned from M14s to M16s between basic training and Advanced Infantry Training. Compared to M16, this national match is HEAVY. Will let you know how it shoots. Meanwhile, open to recommendations for ammo.
Hornady TAP 168 gr and gets under .5 MOA. This is what I like to shoot! so take a look in the ammo section for other ideas and imput! Welcome to the group I'm sure you will find many exciting ideas and conversations here. What's the gunsmith doing to the rifle a little trigger polish or what? Post some Pix when you can and sounds like you'll have a warm winter heading to Texas and all, I'm also thinking about doing the same. Leupolds are also a favorite of mine and work well on my AR-10 Armalite of course Happy hunting friend
Thanks for the reply and info about ammo. The smith was setting up the scope and laser bore sighting it. Not sure I like the mounts or the positioning now that I've got it back. Out to the Boulder City range Saturday and we'll see. Have been reading the barrel breakin discussions but will go with what Armalite recommends in the owner manual.
