Welcome to the site! Given portability is key, I'd look at an AR10 carbine with a 16 inch barrel. If you had the coin, I'd also recommend the FN Mk 17.

I appreciate the response, and the info, I think the FN line are very cool, well thought out weapons, however with my 30 + years of experience with the AR platform and it's mode of operation, I think that I want to try and stay with a rifle, that very much works exactly the same way, merely due to the muscle memory and workability, that I'm already programmed to do....
In addition, I really don't any problems with staying gas operated, even though piston guns may be faster, I wasn't trained to do things in Auto mode....at the most, 3 round bursts, so I'm not sure where I'd benefit from the elevated pricing of the FN platform....so if you have any thoughts on an AR style platform...I'm really interested in knowing of manufacturers that are to be avoided...and maybe some deals out there....I'm also looking to start out flat top, so I can buy/add the accessories I want/need.
I'd look for a carbine style AR10 with a collapsible buttstock. Both Armalite and DPMS/Bushmaster offer them at an affordable price point. The only choices you have to make are free float or non-FF, railed forend or hand guards, and barrel material.
