i was thinking, can i use a bushmaster .223 lower with a 7.62x39 upper receiver???
if so what parts other then the actual upper receiver do i need? do i need to get another mag well? im so lost on this build...
all i want is a AR-15 by target/varmint and when i go hunting swap out uppers to the bigger .308 setup, scope, heavy barrel and such.
the AR-15 part is easy... i need all the advice you can give me to use a 7.62x39 upper receiver on a .223 lower! how does it work and what other items do i need?! (besides mags, thats a given) if you have any questions that i may have not covered comment an ill get back to you asap
I do not have much experience with the 7.62x39 AR15 uppers. I have one friend that uses one as a cheap plinker / hog gun. best I have seen is 3.5-4moa off sandbags, with garbage ammo that's actually very good. all that was required for the conversion was the complete upper and magazines. the magazines are the problematic part, 7.62x39 has a very steep taper and getting it to go around the bend and up the straight mag well of an AR15 can be challenging. the bolt and barrel are the major components in the conversion, the rest of the upper should be interchangeable with common ar15 parts. I'm not 100% sure if the carrier is the same or not. muzzle threads will be different from the 1/2x28 standard and will depend on who makes the barrel/upper. 5/8x24 is what armalite uses. not sure who makes it, but I've seen some with a 9/16xsomething or 1x36m thread. something to consider should you want to suppress it or install a muzzle device of some sort.
I do not personally care for 7.62x39 ballisticly speaking, as it brings nothing to the table that I want. other people do seem happy with it though, and it has become common to see a pretty decent hunting load built around it, with good results 200yds and less.
unfortunately, a .308 upper will not fit on an AR15 lower. that will require building or buying the entire weapon. for this part I can be a lot more useful than with 7.62x39. let me know how I can help and I will gladly do what I can.

This.
If you're looking for a reliable .308 cartridge that'll work from an AR15, I'd take a goood look at 300 Whisper or (better choice) 300 AAC Blackout. Ballistically speaking, performance is slightly better than 7.62x39, you use AR15 mags, and the only thing that needs to be changed out is the barrel. Ammo cost is in the same ballpark as .308 Win. I'm seriously thinking about an upper in 300 Blackout myself.
I'm just waiting for more ammo to hit the market before I take the plunge. Right now, supersonic GP ammo is running around $15.00 a box. From what I've read in other forums, the price will eventually fall to ~$13.00.
I hear ya, I'm holding off on any new calibers for awhile. After I stepped in and out of 6.8spc, I have become apprehensive about investing in the next great thing.
I really wanted to like 6.8. But "Cheap" ammo at $1/round kept me from taking the plunge. It looks like 300 BLK is getting more support from ammo makers than 6.8 did, though.
