I am a new owner of a AR10 SASS but I am wondering if anyone has any experience maintenance wise with these. Is there anything special I need to know? I will have to change a barrel at some point so I need to know if I am going to have any problems with this. I have done several internet searches but the SASS is still kind of new and there does not seem to be a lot of info. Thanks for the help.
First, congrats on the new stick. I hope it gives you years of yeoman service. The SASS is a prescison rifle, so the parts are more finely fitted. Depending on how often you shoot it, pay a little more attention to the bolt lugs, bolt face, and chamber when you clean it. Also use a copper cleaner through the bore every few months or so. (NOTE: Ensure the copper cleaner is safe to use through SS barrels. Some of them are pretty corrosive.)
As for rebarreling, I'm guessing what concerns you is the gas tube w/regulator. Once you get the old barrel out, it's an easy process to remove the gas tube from the old barrel and install it on the new one, provided the new barrel is of the same length as the old one.
Thanks for the reply! Actually I had read somewhere on the internets that you have to cut something to remove the barrel on the SASS and I assumed they were either talking about the Handguard locking ring or the handguard itself. So really I need to know is there something I need to cut to remove the barrel?
One other quick note. I am thinking to break it down to paint or use gunkote. I have not decided on any of these just yet but I usually paint my rifles. Thanks again!
The bolt assembly likes lots of lube and make sure you break the barrel in correctly. You can get barrel break in instructions from Armalites website. Regarding changing out the barrel, (why are you doing that??) I would contact Armalite and ask them what you need to do. Just call and ask for a shop tech and you will get some good answers. These rifles shoot great out of the box, just make sure you find a load your particular rifle likes.
Enjoy.
