Need help in selecting a decent AR-10.Must be reasonably priced and easy to enhance.I am a newbie so any help would be appreciated.Primary use is for self defense .
Some info that would be helpful:
Is this something you foresee as applicable to urban defense out to 300+yards? An AR-10 Carbine is probably just fine for that, and I think it's a good choice for civilian defense in an urban (or ranch) setting Plenty of power at range and good accuracy. If you want to go 600+ with high accuracy I'd look into a full length (20 in or longer), though at those ranges it's hard to argue for many scenarios that count as self defense.
Personally I have an Armalite AR-10(T)Carbine and I love it! There's other options out there of course that folks who have them can speak to.
I have and love my AR10T carbine as well, but self defense still doesn't give us enough detail. Self defense occurs under a variety of scenerios and distances and lighting conditions. The AR10 carbine is going to be heavier, therefore slower to bring to bear on target than an ar15. If self defense is in the home ,the 223 is less likely to go through walls as the 308 will easily do.
Personally for self defense, I keep a 45 acp next to the bed, a 12g pump for real close range in the closet, an ar15 with aimpoint for a littler further, and an ar10 with night vision scope to see those varmits in the dark. Call me paranoid, but the meth heads are always hitting the nitrous tanks on the farm and there is all kinds of riff raff out there. And we all know, when seconds count the police are only minutes away.
Great advive foxhunter, most of the time the sound of the action will send the meth, heads running out the door! I also keep the .45 handy and the old mossburg for close range and I figure anything after that I can through alot of ammo at then with the AR-10.
AKAI
I just purchased an Armalite AR-10 A4B and have been very happy with the performance. The accuracy is much better than promised and I'm just getting started. Originally I had planned on tunning the trigger and maybe a free float grip but the trigger is real sweet as it is so with no accuracy complaints with the rifle I think I'll just shift the funds to the ammo budget and tune the weak link, ME!
I looked at several DPMS and Remington rifles before I ordered the Armalite. On the face Armalite seems a bit high but when you compare the details it cost about the same if you get all the same features. I am still a little disapointed in the fit of my buttplate, check out my other topics for details, but I've read enough to be pretty confident that they will fix the rifle if it doesn't run right during my lifetime. After stripping it down the first time I was very impressed with the fit and finish of the internals, clean, neat, and precise. I'm at about 300 rounds split among four makers and not a hint of an issue. I've read some complaints about AR's being hard on brass, not mine. I've had bolt guns that left worse extractor marks, some cases I just can't see a mark past the scratches that they started with.
If you plan on changing out the stock anyway then I'm sure you won't be disapointed in a baseline AR-10, you might end up like me and decide to just leave it alone and have fun!

Well I don't own a "T" Carbine...just a Standard A4 CB...but I can tell you it has served me well..I have "Hit Dead Zero" at 100 yards...in a vise of course..
It will depend on how you break it in....I used Top Grade Ammo and used a Match Break in....Very Tedious but well worth it when you are done....but no matter...
as a Wise Former Member once told me...it is More up to the shooter than the gun...you can spend 10K on the Best Gun in the world and not hit the barn @ 100 yards...
Just my .25 worth....
