Had been doing chores and honey do's all spring, so when the wife and kids asked what I wanted for Father's day, I said, "lets spend the afternoon shooting".
Took out an AR10T with Nightforce 8-32x npr1 reticle, a savage heavy barrel with custom stock in 308 with a 5-20x leupold vx3(that I found used for less than half the cost to put it together)and my old model 70 in .243 with a leupold 2.5-10x vx3. Bought the winchester new in 1971 for $120.
Found out that the Hornady 165 pushed by IMR4895 didn't group as well as the 168gr amax loaded with varget. Also the Savage bolt shot as well as the AR10T, but not better. They both put the old winchester to shame as it couldn't do better than 1.5 moa 5 shot group and averaged closer to 2 moa. the newer leupold I put on it had not helped it's accuracy, just made seeing the holes easier than the 3-9 weaver I had originally mounted in 1971. Not a target gun, but it has killed a lot of deer in the last 40 yrs.
My daughter and wife much preferred the AR10 over the bolts and shot better with it as they flinched with the 308 bolt and the 243 bolt, which I thought was interesting considering I thought the bolts were pretty mild. My 23 y/o daughter actually shot the best 200yd 5 shot group of the day with the AR10 at just under 2 inches.
Anyway, It made for a nice father's day except now I have several hundred rounds of ammo to reload.
