Just bought my first black rifle and have a Lepold 8.5x25x50mm I want to put on it.Im gonna use Leupold Mark 4 rings on the rail.Someone told me that I absolutley have to use high or super high on any AR because of the straight stock.Ive always used the lowest rings possible when scoping anything Ive owned such as hunting rifles and pistols.Does this NOT apply to the AR? Let me know your thoughts. Thanks!
Medium height rings should work. The excellent Armalite one piece scope mout is a medium height, and it is dimensioned to put the center of scope at the same height as an A2 aperture sight.
I have the exact setup as yours except I'm using Burris rings. I first mounted medium high rings which seemed a little low for me so I tried high rings and am much happier with the high rings. My rings measure 3" from center of the barrel to center of the scope. Before I put the high rings on, I had to crunch my neck down to center the scope. Now it is much more natural when I pull the rifle to my shoulder and it automatically centers my eye in the scope. Try them both to see what works best for you.
The perfect height in my opinion is 1.5 to 1.7" to center of optic...remember this is a AR-10 and will feel and handle different than bolt actions....when I first shot my AR-10, the first two rounds...I was using 1.25" rings....it brought on flash backs of being in a bar fight... my cheek bone was right on the stock...POW.. .OMG...that is when I went much higher.....so my cheek, the muscle, is resting on the stock...much more comfortable...that means better shooting...you can get away with lower with the AR-15....because they don't have the "KICK" of the 10..
My current mount is a LaRue LT-135..QD mount (it's for sale by the way) it sets 1.93" to the center of optic and is great for height and comfort.....but 1.7 is still about perfect....for me anyway.... but no one makes that height...:pinch:
Are you measuring from the top of the rail to the center of the scope or from the center of the barrel to the center of the scope? Your 1.93" may be the same as my 3" depending on where you are measuring.
I always measure from the center of the barrel to center of scope because that is what you need to use in ballistics calculations to calculate trajectories.

CoO refers to the center of optic form the top of the rail to the center of the optic...What you describe is the Center of bore to optic...if I remember right...which gives you the exact measurement to adjust for elevation...again...if I remember right but don't quote me on that...

Hey Wayne, you used the word 'excellent" in describing the Armalite mount. I am using one of these on my AR10 with a 30mm Leupold 10x. The height is perfect and it seems very secure.
do you have any experience with repeatability? if you take it off will it go back on close to zeroed? How about working loose? Does it loosen up during continued firing?
My initial impressions are favorable, just wondering if it will endure.
I have a Rock River one piece mount on mine which is similar to the Armalite mount you are talking about and I have not had any problems with it so far.
