I just bought the last 24" Super SASS barrel from 762SASS.com and will start from there. This will be my first AR-10. I will be buying my upper soon and was wondering why the commercial Super SASS was slick sided (no forward assist). Is there a problem with gas blowback through the forward assist with a suppressor? or is this just a weight or cost saving measure? I would like the forward assist and wanted to know of any problems with this. I am going with all Armalite parts to have absolute conformity including the SASS handguard/gas block kit. Thanks for any info and i will update soon with pics as I progress.
WELCOME TO THE GROUP!!! I thought all armalites had a forward assist now...
Thanks for the welcome donkey1984! They may, I am new to the platform and don't know. I have seen conflicting pictures of the Armalite Super SASS both with and without forward assist and even the PDF manual from armalite shows it in the case without and in schematic with, confusing. Did they start them without and change? I have also seen pictures online both with and without on what I assume are factory builds, just wondering. I believe I am going to build my upper with anyway so if you can only get them with forward assist now at least it works in my favor.

Not sure why they left it off. Probably cause it's not necessary. I've got a DPMS SASS w/ forward assist, and 2 Armalite 10's. A .243 and a .308, neither have the forward assist and none of them need them.
The forward assist was added to the M16 during Vietnam. After extended fire the upper would get fouled and when a new mag was loaded and round chambered it wouldn't close all the way. The forward assist was added. After the 1st round was fired from the dirty rifle it would cycle, the assist was usually only needed to help with the first round, then some oil could be dumped in the receiver to get it running again until it could be properly cleaned.
IMHO, if you build a super SASS and it's needs a forward assist then there's a problem. If a round won't chamber in a quality gun like this don't try to force.
The SASS the way AR has it now has the forward assist.
From what Ive learned here and seen on Armalites site only forward assist uppers are available from Armalite from new stock, maybe there are some uppers without F/A floating around in inventory in some shops out there but I couldn't find any.
My Upper, SASS hanguard/gas system kit and bolt carrier group should be in today and I already have my 24" SASS/T Barrel Stainless Steel (Black Coated) from 762SASS.com and PRI Gas Buster charging handle so I will get some pictures up of everything tonight of all the components and maybe some during the build process.
Let me know of any particular pictures of the parts/process that you may want me to take.
