New to the forum. In a research mode. I want to build an AR 10 and I want it to have the most punch I can get out of the platform. I have built a couple of AR 15's and I want to hunt Elk with a AR 10. Joe "C"

Out to 300 yds, you can use a .308, or 7mm-08. If you want a little more punch the a .338 federal will be more than enough.

Joe,

You stated you wanted to use your AR-10 for Elk. Since Elk have the most impenetrable skin of all the North American ruminoids, I'd recommend using a heavy bullet. If you decide to go with the .308 and use a bullet heavier than 168 gr, you'll need to go with a 1:10 twist barrel to stabilize the heavier bullet. The standard 1:11.25 barrel is only recommended for 168 gr bullets and below. The heavier bullet should also give you a little more energy at the longer ranges.

The nice thing about the 30 caliber over the .338 is there are so many .30 bullets to choose from.

Just my $.02, Jer
