I am new to this site and I am looking for info on AR-10's. Today while deer hunting I decided that I need to upgrade my "armory" with an AR to use for deer hunting and fun shooting. I have a fair assortment of "toys" covering shotguns, traditional rifles, one black powder rifle, handguns from .22 cal up to .44 mag, but NO AR-10. I look forward to hearing more info about the AR platform on the site.
Well let me be the first to welcome you to our site...Welcome Tdickerson..
As for info...The are many categories on the AR-10, optics and accessories here to aid you as well...but personal input is also a big contributing factor...so I will do my part and see if I can help.
With the Actual ArmaLite AR-10, you have several choices, have you been to the Armalite home site, anyway...lets start with the one I own...AR-10 A4 Carbine, you might look at the article in the article section also, I decided after months of research to go with ArmaLite. Being the Original company of which all others were fashioned after, it just made sense. My 16" barrel is more than adequate to do the job for which I built it....as you say shooting fun...as well as protection, I may add I also bought a M-15 A4 CB for the same purposes...They are well build and quality unsurpassed as far as their design...My carbine can easily reach 400 yards plus with acceptable accuracy, given my shooting skill...NOVICE.. ..If a hunting rifle is in your mind as well, then one of the longer barreled rifles would be more to your liking...the standard A2, A4 the T or even the SASS...all have longer barrels and have their own top end attributes..You would need to go to the ArmaLite site and see what configuration would best suit you....and with the New .243 and .260, there are even more hunting options...it is really going to depend on you as to what YOU want in a AR-10...
Now getting parts such as handguards and other add-ons can be somewhat of a chore but it is well worth it when you are finished building it into what you want...but the AR-10 does not match up with any other of the .308 Cerberus Platforms...such as DPMS and Rem, Bushmaster.....ArmaLite is a stand alone company with just a hand full of companies that follow the Lion as I like to call them....
Well this is probably not quite what you had hoped for but I think it is a good start in letting you know what the AR-10 is about...take alook at the rifles and see what interests you, then we can proceed...
and again....Welcome.
