I am looking into my first AR and want it to be 308.
I have another rifle in 308 (Saiga)
I had an AR15 (Bushy) back in 2002 and never shot it and then sold it due to bills.
So.. I need this to be under $1500
RRA w/20" bbl and Flashider & door & forward assist.. $1479
Armalite w/20" bbl and flashider & above items.. $1300-1500
DPMS w/20" bbl and above items.. $979-1380
I want 20" and want the forward assist and chamber 'door'
and I guess the 1/10 twist is standard.. also want threaded 5/8" and/or brake or Flash Hider out the box.
What would you get and why..
Seems like the RRA's are quoting 1MOA..
Model #'s to serch for would be great. (or links)
For example DPMR Panther Classic is $919 at Buds..
Again.. I don't want to regret shelling out the $.
I have an Armalite 10A4BF that I like very much. It shoots as advertized at 1.5 - 2 " with military surplus ammo (German DAG from Widners). That is acceptable accuracy for me as I didn't buy it for competition. So far it has performed flawlessly with around 450 rounds through it. The only problem has been the 20 round mag won't feed properly with more that 12 rounds in it, but that's not the rifle.
It really depends on your intended purpose for the rifle as for what to choose.
And welcome to the site. A lot of good info here.

I've had all three brands, so here's my take on them:
DPMS:
Good rifles and the 2 that I've had were excellent in the accuracy department. Both had issues though. FTE, FTF, etc. When I tried to get help from the company, they basically blew me off. Fit and finish of the rifles is the worst if the three brands. But like I said, they did shoot well, when they shot. My shooting partner runs a DPMS and he has had really good luck with his. He still has a few problems, but not as much as I did and I think most of his stem from his reloads. I had issues with factory ammo too. The DPMS/SR25 style rifles seem to be pulling ahead when it comes to aftermarket accessories and magazines.
Armalite:
I've had 3 different Armalites. Fit and finnish are always top notch. Accuracy hasn't been as good as the DPMS or RRA. The Armalites I owned were very reliable and I can't remember ever having any problems. If I did, they were probably minor. Magazines are Armalite only, which use to be a problem, but their GEN 2, mags are really good. Stay away from the converted M1A magazines. I don't own an Armalite AR10 anymore, because I just could not get the accuracy out of them that I knew I was capable of shooting. I have an Armalite M15 upper that is phenominal! But have not had great luck with the AR10. I have a friend whose 20" AR10 is very good though. So maybe I'm just not very lucky with getting a good one. If I found a good one, I wouldn't hesitate buying it. I've been eyeballing a SuperSASS at one of the local gun shops for a while now, but just haven't bought it yet..........
Rock River:
I have been extremely pleased with these rifles. Fit and finish are excellent! I wanted to try these rifles out, mainly because I love FAL rifles, and this rifle uses the FAL magazine. And I have plenty of those on hand. This may or may not be a problem for you. FAL magazines are not going for $5 a piece anymore and some say they are starting to 'dry up'. I can easily find them still and RRA and DSA are both starting to make magazines. RRA will be coming out with a 20 round polymer magazine in the next few weeks, with 5, 10, and 30 round magazines to follow shortly. I have both the 16" Mid-length and 26" Varmint models of the LAR-8 rifle. Both have been outstanding in accuracy and reliability. Both will shoot under 1 MOA easily. The only issues I've had with them, were induced by me. I broke the bolt hold open rods on both rifles, because of my suppressor use. This was my fault and not the rifles and I'm now experimenting with some things to prevent this from happening in the future. If you run a suppressor, the Armalite would be the easier way to go, because they have that nice switch block that you can order for using a suppressor. (or get their SuperSASS and it comes standard)
So there are my thoughts on the three brands that you listed. There are others out there that are really nice rifles also. POF, LMT, LWRC, just to name a few.
I don't think you'll go wrong with any of them. I think it just comes down to personaly preferance and money.
Don't get hung up on a forward assist. If a round doesn't want to chamber, I for one would not try to chamber it with a forward assist. To me you are just asking for more problems. I'd rather eject that round and get a fresh round in there that won't have the potential to jam up on you and fail to eject, because you jammed it into the chamber. It's also a lot faster to eject a round than it is to try and 'forward assist' it into the chamber.
I was trained that the correct purpose of the forward assist was to force the bolt into lockup so you could fire. I was instructed to yank the charging handle first at even a hint of a failure to chamber. I remember being told this could be a factor in prolonged use without cleaning. I'm suprised I can't remember exactly how the drills went, guess it has been some time.
I have a 20 inch Armalite 10A4GF with an Armalite free float tube and an Armalite scope mount with a Weaver Extream Classic 2.5-10x50 scope .I have had it back to Armalite to polish a tight chamber and to have the free float installed I beleive they also gave me a national match trigger .This rifle is a tack driver and 100% relieable .Armalite customer service is outstanding, best in the biz. You can't go wrong with Armalite.
Last week I was out in the Sonoran desert and we were shooting old brake rotors we hang at 500 yards with it and Fed GM 175 SMK ammo .Never missed once.
