I've been reading lots of the correspondence and want to say thanks already for all the valuable info you guys provide on this site. I'm a new member, an old-timer who is an NRA Life Member. I have a couple of dozen pistols and rifles ranging from .222 Rem to .300 Weatherby Mag and I reload for all of them (except the rimfires, of course). Most of the rifles are bolt actions, but I just recently built my first AR15 to share with my 15-yr-old son. Now I'm ready to build or buy a big-boy semi-auto rifle. I'll probably study all the options for quite a while because it's a pretty big investment for me. I envy some of you guys who have multiple rifles, spare uppers, and several primo sights and scopes. I want to make it count when I buy the one 7.62-format rifle I can afford. That leads to my first question here, not that there's anything wrong with .308 caliber, but I'm really sold on the 7mm-08 caliber and I wonder if you guys have any suggestions how I can acquire an AR10T in that caliber without spending my life savings. There is a perfect range of choices of bullet weights in 7mm for anything from coyotes to elk, and it works well for long range target shooting also (paper or perps!) I think a 24" barrel flat-top with about a 6x24-power scope and a good bi-pod would put a big smile on my face every time I used it.
Thanks for the welcome. I'll try to share my pursuit of my 7mm dream rifle with others on the forum. In fact, I just got a response from an email I sent to Armalite's sales department. They say they are planning to offer a 7mm-08 AR10T at some point, but they have no firm intro date or pricing information as of right now.
I don't know whether to wait and hope it will be affordable or to pursue my other alternative, which is to buy a custom barrel and build the rest. Estimated cost for doing it that way is $1600 or more, even with DPMS parts, but I'd really rather have an all-Armalite rifle.
