Hello everyone i am relativly new to the ar10 platform,i recently purchased a rra lar8.This rifle will mainly be used for whitetail hunting.I would like to ask the members what grain bullet you recommend 150 or 165.In addition i look forward to gaining the knowledge of the members because in this platform i consider myself a novice.
Which model of LAR-8 did you get? I have 2 LAR-8's. The first one is the 16" mid-length model and the other is the 26" Varmint model. I've found that they really like the 180 gr. Nosler Ballistic tip.
Are you planning on reloading or buying off the shelf?
I am awaiting arrival of the lar8 predator hp.I went with the rra because of the performance of my lar15s.I will be buying off the shelf @ am thinking of the federal fusion 150 or 165.Again this is a hunting rifle.my optics are gonna be a zeiss conquest 3-9 atop warne high tactical rings. What kind of groups are you getting from yours and thanks for the tip but i think the 180 for deer might not be my best option.
My concerns with the 180 would be expansion at close range. Most of my shots will be under 100yds,i think the 150 or 165 might be better suited.Thats a great group was that shot with the varmint model? How mant rounds do you have through them and have you had any feeding or extraction issues.I ordered a 5 rnd mag from dsa for hunting (ny legal) and i heard some people having trouble with these mags. Also did you break in the barrel or just shoot like rra says you can. Thanks for help and input.
I've got over 3000 rounds through the mid-length and about 600 rounds through the Varmint.
I had a bolt stop rod break on the mid-length somewhere in the 950 to 1000 round mark. RRA sent me a new rod quickly and it was easy to install. I haven't had another issue with it in the last 2000 rounds.
I've never had any other issues with either rifle. Extraction and feeding have always been perfect. I run the mid-length pretty hard at times, often with a suppressor attached, and have run up to 350 rounds in a 1 hour time frame on a couple of occasions. My barrel was litterally red hot.
I've never used anything smaller than a 20 round magazine, so I wouldn't be able to tell you about the 5 round magazine.
Also, I've never done a "break-in" on any of my barrels. Most barrels that I get are custom made and have already been 'lapped', so they've never needed this. For the most part I think this "break-in" procedure is a farse. I do think it has some merit on "factory" barrels, such as those made by Remington, that they spit out in a quick fasion, leaving ugly tool marks behind. But these same barrels can have other issues as well, like having a bad crown or no/bad rifling at the end of the barrel. For high quality barrels, I see no need for a break-in. I asked George Garner of GA Precision what I should do when I bought one of his rifles. His exact words were "Just go shoot it". He then told me that he puts a break-in procedure on his web site and includes it in with every rifle he ships, just to keep the people who insist on doing it from calling him and making him spend his valuable time explaining the procedure to them.
I have not done any break in procedure on the LAR-8's and they are still shooting well. In fact I just shot them again this weekend and got the same results as you see in the picture that I previously posted. In fact the group may have been a bit better.
I also have the LAR-8. Like Edge, I have the 26" varmint version. I can also verify it shoots those sub MOA groups with factory Fed GMM 168 and 175 gr at 100y. I have taken the GMM 175's out to 400y and got a 2.75" group. Based on all the hardware store ammo I have run through mine, I am sure any factory round you feed the 26" Varmint will be inside a 4" group inside of 150y. I don't know about the Preditor, but it can't be that different from the varmint 26 can it Edge?
We can't hunt deer with rifles here in IL so I don't know what the best ammo for a good mushroom is. Do you still want a mushroom from your bullet when hunting or is full metal jacket prefered?
I definetly want a mushroom and dont want to hunt with a fmj.Im gonna try loads in 150,165, and 180.Federal fusions,Remington corelok,Hornady, and the noslers edge recommended gonna try em all.The predator is like a 20 inch varmint just with some weight shaved off the barrel. Thanks for the input.
